From the company Web site:

Bravo! announces a voluntary recall of select tubes of three of its poultry products for cats and dogs. The pet food is being recalled because two of the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, while the other product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Both Salmonella and Listeria are organisms which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and if there is cross contamination, in people, especially small children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people with Salmonella infection may only suffer short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Long term complications can include arthritis and other more serious ailments. Healthy people with Listeria infection may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals associated with any of the three products.

The rest includes product codes and other information.

I’m not going to weigh in on the raw food debate here, except to say that if anyone uses this recall as “evidence” that raw diets are dangerous, I’m going go to ask them to click on the 1,985,985,357 words we’ve written since March on rolling recalls of processed products and remind them that people in glass houses should keep their mouths shut. Or open those mouths and speak up for greater safety in our food-supply system.

In other words, food safety is an issue with every food, for every person at every stage of the chain. No matter what you’re eating.

  2. Don’t worry. The Guvment’ will take care of it.

    Quick. Downsize the FDA

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told Congress on Wednesday the government will hit the current debt ceiling on Oct. 1. He sought quick action to increase the limit, saying it was essential to protect the “full faith and credit” of the country, especially at a time of financial market turmoil.

The limit is $8.965 trillion. Unless Congress votes to raise it, the country would be unable to borrow more money to keep the government operating and to pay debt obligations coming due.

  3. Right on Secretary Paulson.

RAISE THAT DEBT CEILING RIGHT NOW!!! We don’t want to stop the flow of the $100+ billion per year that goes to corporate welfare (special tax breaks, subsidies, free research, free advertising, trade promotion, … etc.).

Increase those $billions$ by squeezing those silly, inconvenient consumer and food safety laws - they only get in the way of free enterprise.

  6. I have been in touch with Bravo’s owner. Bravo gets its meats thru Bogner meats, which is a human grade plant, and thus subjected to FDA inspections. They were the lucky recipients of a such a rare, unusual and outre occurence. Surprisingly, given the slaughtering practices of poultry in this country where the carcasses after gutting are dumped quickly by conveyor belt into a cold water bath, that there was some salmonella and listeria bacterial contamination. Since these bacteria are found in normal poultry intestinal bacteria, what a surprise!

“thank you so much for your support. It means a lot to us in these trying times.

It is a case of the FDA gone wild and if we are not vigilant they will shut down all of us. They really want to put us and all the raw dog food companies out of business.”

Yup, shut down a reputable, ethical raw food company, and force us to feed our pets melachicken from China. Ain’t life grand?!
