The pro-mandatory spay/neuter folks have retired Price is Right host Bob Barker, who is in Sacramento lobbying on behalf of California’s AB 1634, which would require all dogs and cats in the state to be altered by the time they are six months old.

On Tuesday, those opposing the bill will have some heroes of their own: Timmy and Lassie.

From Capital Notes:

Waiting his turn behind the fitness crowd was another octogenarian, Bob Barker. The newly retired game show host was at the Capitol to lobby for passage of AB 1634, the controversial bill requiring most pets to be spayed or neutered.

By the way, opponents of AB 1634… which has become one of the most contentious legislative battles of the year… are bringing their own star power to Sacramento tomorrow; they’re bringing the ninth generation of dogs named Lassie, and actor Jon Provost, who played Lassie’s owner, Timmy, on the TV series.

Joining Provost and Lassie will be owner/handler Robert Weatherwax.

  1. “Lassie, get help” —- y’know, that’d be a great name for a blog…

Off to feed the sheep and grab a Starbucks :~)

  2. This bill is very dangerous especially if it sets pattern that other states follow. We need tougher federal , state and local laws on animal care especially governing pet stores and puppy mills. We need police officers animal cruelty investigators that enforce the laws and are not part of the good old boys system that has a look the other way attitude.

Are any of the supporters of this bill members of groups that would like to see an end to all pets, and farm animals . Only wild animals would be allowed and everyone would be a vegatarian?

  3. This bill is bad news, I agree with Thomas as to the ‘fix’ for the problem, no pun intended. And as I’m one of those horrid vegitarians I guess that says something, lol. But then, my dogs and cats and the two legged mammel I married all eat meat with gusto, I tend to wish them bon apetit.

  4. Yes Lassie, Get the Help!! In all seriousness, if Ab 1634 goes though, there will be no more “Lassie” for future generations. The lineage of Collies who play “Lassie” come from a line of non- papered dogs. AB 1634 will not allow this line to continue. Something to think about…..
