A recall of Chinese chocolate. From the FDA:
Tristar Food Wholesale, 115 Amity Street, Jersey City, NJ 07304 is recalling Ferrari Chocolate because it contains undeclared peanuts. People who have severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. The candy also contains aflatoxins in excess of the Food and Drug Administration’s action level of 20 parts per billion. Aflatoxins are by products of certain fungi and, with chronic exposure, are potential carcinogens.
The recalled Ferrari Chocolates, a product of China, is distributed in 280g and 240g per box. The Ferrari chocolate was sold in New York City and in New Jersey.
The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by the Department’s food laboratory personnel revealed the presence of undeclared peanuts and aflatoxins in the product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
I’m sorry, but if I have to worry about my chocolate I will have to take up drinking.

Sorry didn’t mean to clink submit. This is an article in Jan 2007 where Hershey and Lotte (from So. Korea) are doing a joint venture to make chocolate in China.
Wonder where the raw ingredients will come from?

Wonderful, just wonderful……….. if they take my chocolate away from me they will have one wacked out woman to deal with!

Bottoms up, Gina!
The NY State Food Lab personnel are more successful at finding toxins than the FDA. Perhaps they would be willing to test our pet food (and anything else from China).

aflatoxin in chocolate? fungi, mold, in chocolate? nothin’ grows on chocolate…how’d they do that? maybe somthin’ that went into the chocolate?
too weird, what’s next??

glad to know that fda is doing *something* productive with their time, since they seem to be moving at a snail’s pace on the acetaminophen in the pet food.

Why oh why do I suspect this Chinese chocolate was not only sold in New York and New Jersey? Other brand names? Other importers? Hope the other state food safety agencies are as on the ball as NY’s seem to be.

Heavens, hold the chocolate, pass the tequila. Your best bet is probably one of the fair traded chocolates, econuts have not been proven allergenic or hazardous to your health. Is the suggestion by the FDA that they might allow substitution of some of the cocoa butter by other (lord only knows what) fats a way of opening the door to more Chinese chocolate brands?
Comment by Nancy Nielsen — June 7, 2007 @ 12:11 pm
Aflatoxin is one of the most carcinogenic substances there is. Glad I stay away from chocolate and peanuts. China cornering the market on peanuts…what more would they need to conquer the world?
Comment by ango — June 7, 2007 @ 12:23 pm
These people are asking for trouble when they start messing with my basic food triangle. You start screwing around with chocolate & then work your way into wine & tequila, you have a post menopausal woman that relies on these for her sanity. You don’t want to screw with these foods as they keep me calm & sane…..which has been very difficult since 3/16, trust me on that.
Not only do I have few choices on what I feed my dog, but now they are taking away our choices on food & those simple little pleasures that we all need. D a m n !

Lawmakers ask Bush to consider ban on China food imports
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Democratic members of a powerful House committee called for President Bush to consider banning all food imports from China until the Food and Drug Administration can prove they are safe. In a Tuesday letter to the FDA’s commissioner, members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee wrote that they are concerned about the safety of fish and seafood from China, and cited examples of imports containing banned antibiotics, as well as contaminants such as salmonella. “It is quite disturbing to consider that China lacks effective controls to ensure that their exported foods are safe,” according to the letter. The committee, which is investigating the U.S. food supply, requested information for 2001 to 2006 from FDA about items such as the number of Chinese food samples analyzed by private and FDA labs, and the amount found to have problems.

See’s is one of the chocolate makers that’s supporting the push to be able to substitute vegetable fats for cocoa butter. My heart breaks on that one. I grew up on See’s and my parents still send it to me on all the ‘major’ days.
guess i’ll have to ask them to start sending CA wines instead . . :p

You all have got to read this book-
The Eleventh Plague by John S. Marr., M. D. and John Baldwin
It even talks about aflatoxin. The book is a novel of Medical Terror.
It was written in 1998, but you might find it on ebay. I’m reading it for the second time since this all happened.

“Hershey is taking a different stand than Guittard.
Spokesman Kirk Saville said, “There are high-quality oils available which are equal to or better than cocoa butter in taste, nutrition, texture and function, and are preferred by consumers.”
Quality is a “top priority” at Hershey, and “any product change will be driven by consumer preference,” he added. “We expect to conduct extensive testing before changing any of our products.”“
uh, yeah, we believe that. wonder if they will be adding Milk Protein Concentrate also . . .
just picked up a 2lbs of raw organic cocoa recently for baking and ice cream making. guess i’ll be looking into candy making now also, funtimes! :)

Chocolate with no cocoa butter? What the heck is wrong with all of these people?????!!!! I hate these big companies now, I really, really do. And I can’t believe See’s supports this.
So now we’ll have to read chocolate labels to make sure they contain contain chocolate. Unbelievable. What’s next? Having to read milk cartons to make sure it’s really milk?
Thank goodness Guittard is taking a stand on this. They’ve got GREAT chocolate too. My favorite. Unfortunately I haven’t found it since I left the Bay Area last year. But I’m going to look harder, they deserve every single penny of my chocolate budget.

Didn’t Diamond dry dog food have a serious recall several years ago due to aflatoxin in it? And something like 70 dogs died (?)? I seem to remember that is not all that unheard of in feeds, like in horse grain, we sometimes see mold on corn, or worse, they stick too much of the substance that prevents it in the feed. We horse owners sometimes find out when X number die at one barn, and they look for the common culprit.
Of course, the Diamond recall was before everything paled in comparison to what we are facing now.

Linda - because of straybaby’s ice cream comment, I bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker (I have a KA mixer, but the Cuisinart was less than the KA attachment here). Yesterday, I made caramel pecan ice cream which is hardening in the freezer; today I am trying a darker chocolate/almond for dh. Previously made choc. for him, and a peaches & cream for me (which I served up with tons of ripe peaches on top).
This ice cream deal really rocks. Once you get the hang of it, the flavor possibilities are endless. Another thx to stray for putting the idea out there.

Ohh, TC: Thanks for the encouragement. Yummy - have four days off to fiddle with ice cream - Cuisianart ice cream maker - will check it out!

Candymaking - could be fun. I had a bad time making the caramel for the ice cream yesterday, embarassing given how easy it actually turned out to be. DH looked at the sites I had online, and made my caramel - that was sweet. Maybe with his help, we can figure get out of first grade here, and make some cool candy.
I will admit to having some measure of fun cooking since I have been scared snotless out of the grocery aisles:) I am managing to do more with things local and in season, than I ever did before with all those vast choices in front of me at the store. Yeah, been some mistakes, but not many!

Linda: One note - the finished product is more like soft serve ice cream when it comes out of the machine. Once you’ve frozen it for long enough, it becomes much harder. That would be so cool to get recipes from the CSA to “experiment ” with. Our closest one (although still quite a trek) is called The Dancing Cow - am hoping with a name like that, they might be creative types:)
Right now, it has alternated between 90 some days, then plunging to 27 degrees at night! I had picked up some tomato, zuchini, cuke plants and herbs and don’t dare put them out yet. Shoot, even the horses have been coming inside the barn or being blanketed, because they all lost their winter coats, but now need them! High desert living is a challenge in many ways:)
Linda - maybe there will have to be an ice cream section at the new petfoodrecipes website (peggy’s site, right? Can’t find the thread!), for their stressed out human companions, but every recipe must have one of those dog/cat appropriate names, lol..

One more note re homemade ice cream.
I had completely quit eating my favorite store bought ice creams, as they were causing me major stomach issues, pain, bloating, etc. Sometimes bloating so badly I was in discomfort all evening. I wondered if I was allergic to dairy or ice cream specifically. I was okay with milk, but not ice cream, so the mystery deepened.
I don’t know what they are putting into ice cream nowdays, but I have eaten all of the homemade stuff without one symptom recurring. And for the record, same deal with the anise seed I bought for a cheap price online - and my stomach issues ended when I quit using that as well. Watching my improvements has made me even more jumpy about what I buy, because this is for real.
So just like our pet food, I still think there are major problems in human foods as well. I am getting a glimpse everytime I eliminate one thing or substitute another, and find a health issue of mine clearing up.

For all you sweet tooth’s here’s a link to the best almond toffee ever made IMO. I’ve been ordering this for over 25 years…absolutely to die for delicious! Made in Grand Junction, Colorado…and there are recipes on their site too.
http://www.enstrom.com
Enstrom’s Story:
The story of Enstrom’s begins with a hobby and a man named Chet.
At the age of 14, Chet Enstrom got his start in the candy business when he went to work as a soda jerk at an ice cream and candy factory in Colorado Springs . Between scoops of ice cream, Chet kept an eye on the confectioners as they plied their trade, and quietly learned the candy craftsman’s art.
In 1929, Enstrom and his new bride, Vernie, packed up their Model T and drove the muddy, rut-filled roads west to Grand Junction , Colorado to begin a new life. Soon, he and a partner opened the Velvet Ice Cream Company, a business he pursued for the next 30 years.
Meanwhile, Chet also pursued his favorite hobby: hand-crafting Almond Toffee . Experimenting in his basement at night and on weekends, Chet brewed up small batches of the confection as a gift for family and friends. By 1960, his Almond Toffee had begun to develop a reputation, and at the urging of family and friends, Chet founded Enstrom Candies.
Chet and Vernie planned to make their new ” Candy Kitchen” a mom and pop operation, but the orders flooded in. Production grew to 1,000 pounds per year by 1965, when Chet sold the business to his son and daughter-in-law, Emil and Mary Enstrom.
Under the direction of Emil and Mary, Enstrom Candies thrived. By 1979, production had reached over 65,000 pounds and Chet’s granddaughter, Jamee and her husband, Doug Simons joined the company. In 1993, Jamee and Doug purchased the business and continued building the company.
Today, Enstrom Candies produces over a half-million pounds of Almond Toffee annually, all by hand in small batches of about 70 pounds each. Truly “World Famous,” this fresh dairy confection is shipped in one- to five-pound boxes to connoisseurs in all 50 states and hundreds of foreign countries.
Enstrom Candies remains a family business. Jamee and Doug oversee operation of the ” Candy Kitchen” in Grand Junction , which includes a retail store. Chet’s grandson, Rick and his wife, Linda, manage the Denver retail outlets. This third generation of confectioners still operates with the philosophy begun by Chet over 60 years ago: that they’re just making a little almond toffee for a few of their friends.

Kat, I don’t know much about the scorpions and having so many of these deadly creatures dropping down from all places into all things and biting my pets is a little disconcerting to say the least.
Is there a scorpion nest in your house? I did a little research on them and as an omen I think they point to self-sacrificing and sense you have so many of them you must be quite the “giver”.
Maybe there’s something you can do that will draw them away from your house - and I sure hope one doesn’t bite you - they give me a creepy feeling and it seems a little dangerous too to have so many about.

straybaby, I have the cat photos covered but I do need Dog Photos! If you would like to do a banner/title for me that would be awesome! 800px across and height not more than 250-300px, wanna use blue and green if you need color choices. (Blue is for healing and green is for growth.) But I don’t want to limit you either and I haven’t really done a lot color wise so just see what you come up with.
E., if you would like to send some Dog Photos that would be great, too!! The Titles would be great but I kinda need Recipes to go with them. Oh but some recipes may not have names yet, so that would be great for those. E., do you know about getting some advertising and or doing marketing? I didn’t do as well in my e-commerce class and I could use some help getting the word out.
Thanks for all the offers of help!!
I have to get the email going, which is my first task today. (after checking for any recalls, new toxins etc, which is what I was doing here, lol)
For today I need a puppy, an adult dog, a senior dog and a special dog, to get things fleshed out, (I’ve got the cat pics covered what with the big group I have and all)
Then I can use any and all photos after that, cats too and other pets; I’ll manage to fit them in somehow. Can’t ever have to many pictures of cute pets. I’ll do the editing and stuff, don’t worry about that.
Thanks again, everyone! Your support is awesome!! I’ll post the email shortly.

I live in near Philadelphia and did a paper on ice cream history my senior year in high school.
There are two basic types of ice cream:
French style— with eggs
Philadelphia style — no eggs
No eggs is cheaper and keeps a bit better in the nasty humid weather we have here in the summer.

Peggy, can you post your e-mail as I have the cutest photo of my Mercy to send you - she’s a black and tan Doberman but I tried clicking on your name and of course - under construction. Thanks.

“What’s next? Having to read milk cartons to make sure it’s really milk?”
Don’t laugh. Several months ago I needed some heavy cream and went looking for same. I looked at a dozen brands across many stores but always found additives, etc. on the carton.
I was knocked on my heels when one day I picked up a pint carton at a grocery and the contents read:
CREAM
(only that and nothing else)
How innovative!

So much talk about chocolate made me break my chocolate fast today—I bought a bar from whole foods that said organic—delish, so delish. Nothin’s goin’ to fit me if I keep this up.
Thankful ice cream is not my thing ‘cause I get very sick when I eat it.

Thanks Peggy - will search out the photo and send later on today or tonight. Borrowing a computer and internet access so I can’t send it right now.

It seems like everything that contains GM products, is getting recalled ‘these days’. It wasn’t mentioned in this article, but I would never expect it to be! Remember all we leared re: GM during the pet food scandal? I took that to a whole new level, and really started researching it. I got pi$$ed enough to learn how to put a website up on the crap, and am listing those foods we found, too on it. CHOCOLATE - my dear friends - does indeed contain - Genetically Modified Chit in it. *HEAD SPINS* of course…not labeled… :(
