Hooray! Meow! Hooray!

We just — as in five minutes ago — turned in the manuscript for “MeowWow: Curiously Compelling Facts, True Tales and Trivia Even Your Cat Won’t Know,”  the second of three books Dr. Becker and I promised to do in the first half of the year. (The cover at right has changed, I think, to have a fluffy orange tabby on it instead. Because it tested better with the sales staff and buyers. I’ll get the new one up soon, but not tonight.)

The first book we finished this year, “Why Do Horses Sleep Standing Up? 101 of the Most Perplexing Questions Answered About Equine Enigmas, Medical Mysteries, and Befuddling Behaviors,” was turned in just before the first pet-food recall in March. Is it just me, or does that seem like a very, very long time ago?

The third book, “BowWow: Curiously Compelling Facts, True Tales and Trivia Even Your Dog Won’t Know,” is due to our editor on … um … Thursday.

Let’s just say we negotiated a teeny bit of a grace period on that one, to the middle of next  month.  Thanks, Allison. We love you!

The next time Dr. Becker and I agree to do three books in a six-month period, could I make a small request that said time period not coincide with the biggest pet-food recall in history? Please?

In the meantime … two done, one to go. Hooray! Meow! Hooray!

Dr. Becker is a dream to work with. After the final book this spring, we’ll have done five books together in 18 months, one of them a New York Times best-seller (“Why Do Dogs Drink Out of the Toilet?: 101 of the Most Perplexing Questions Answered About Canine Conundrums, Medical Mysteries and Befuddling Behaviors.”).  And of course, he and I lead the team of animal experts and journalists who do the Pet Connection syndicated pet-care page for newspapers across the country. (We’ve also written many books with other people, and on our own.)

There’s nothing in the world as sweet as doing what you love, and knowing what you do makes a difference.

And with that thought … I think I’ll pour a nice glass of wine and call it a night.

  5. Not sure where to post this item. Local news stations reporting today that 2 cats in separate incidents within a week in the northern suburbs of Detroit have been shot at point blank range and have had to have a front leg amputated in each. Lot of sick demented people out there folks.

  9. Congrats Gina! As a creative who once did a stint in children’s books, I’m very impressed with the 3 in 6 mos!!! the only “authors’ i recall having that kind of turn around were revised or back catalog! lol!~

look forward to them and i think i have a sister with a new kitty (she hasn’t been a pet owner before) who may be needing a lil’ present ;)

  10. Here is the story about the cat with the arrow through it’s neck. Some people make me so sick! It reminds me of the duck (or was it a goose) that had an arrow through it’s neck.

  13. “kaching”!
That is the sound of my wine glass toasting yours, and also the sound of the well deserved money that will be “kachinging” in your pocketbook.
