From the Associated Press:

The family of Army Spc. Justin Rollins feels a little better thanks to a puppy, fresh from a nearly 6,000-mile journey from Iraq, that connects them to one of the soldier’s last happy moments.

Seeing photos of the 22-year-old nuzzling a puppy from a newborn litter the night before his death in a roadside bombing in Iraq prompted Rollins’ family and girlfriend to start pushing to adopt Hero, who arrived in New Hampshire on Friday.

“It was the last bit of happiness Justin had,” said Rollins’ girlfriend, Brittney Murray.

Here’s the rest. God bless them all.

  3. On this Memorial Day and always, thank you and God bless all those who serve and sacrifice so much for our country. What a wonderful blessing the puppy will bring to this caring family.

  4. I adopted a soldier 4 years ago who is currently serving his second tour in Iraq. He too developed a relationship in Iraq with a dog, and he sent me a photo of them together as well. I think I’ll be looking at that photo again today - -

This article is very touching, thanks for posting it.

Thank you to all of our troops, for ALL that you do!!!

Despite the negative news so much in the press, progress has been made in Iraq, a great deal of progress and there is a lot of good news there that is not being communicated to us in the media. Our troops are doing a great job and have accomplished so very much, thank you thank you!!!!

  5. Justin’s family and girlfriend have been so gracious—what a wonderful thing to do. Justin also had done pet rescues in the U.S. … I hope little ‘Hero’ brings them comfort and joy over the years, however bittersweet the adoption may be.
