Tiger in a zooFrom the Newsday:

An East Moriches man charged with theft says his cat was injured in an abandoned house — and he stole copper pipes from the house to pay the $1,300 veterinarian bill.

Martin Haley, 27, and his friend Joseph Hernandez, 24, of St. James, were arrested Saturday night after police responded to a report of theft at the vacant house at 61 Driftwood Lane in East Moriches, police said.

The men pleaded guilty Sunday to third-degree burglary and possession of burglars’ tools at First District Court in Central Islip.

Reached at home Sunday, Haley, who lives next to the vacant house, said he took the pipes because he believed the absentee owner’s negligence had caused his cat’s injuries and he couldn’t afford the vet bill.

“This house has been abandoned for at least 20 years,” Haley said. “The roof is collapsing and falling in. The walls are barely stable. … There are six or seven raccoons living in the attic. The back doors and window are all open.”

Haley said his cat, Frack, was bitten by a raccoon and fell through the house’s crumbling ceiling. Frack was treated for an injured eye, a broken jaw and an abscess that the veterinarian said was caused by a bite from a raccoon or possum, Haley said.

And from Canada, this tragic story of why tigers don’t make good pets:

The pet tiger that killed a woman from 100 Mile House, B.C., was euthanized Saturday by a veterinarian, with the approval of the animal’s owner.

On Thursday night, the three-year-old tiger took a fatal swipe at 32-year-old Tanya Dumstrey-Soos at an exotic pet farm owned by her boyfriend. The animal first clawed at her dress, then her legs, severing an artery.

  1. Why does the tiger have to die for being how he was born? Humans were given the ability to think and reason, why wasn’t it exercised on part of the woman and boyfriend?

  2. Educated guess: The tiger was euthanized because the owner didn’t want him any more, and because there are so many “pet” tigers that appropriate homes can be found for unwanted ones.
