Pro athletes and dog-fighting: Setting the wrong example
By Gina Spadafori

The NFL’s Michael Vick isn’t the first professional athlete to be questioned over possible involvement in dog fighting. The NBA has also had problems with this. The Humane Society of the United States is now asking the NFL to step up:
A prominent animal-rights group called on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to ban players who are involved in dog fighting, saying it was especially troubled that evidence of the deadly activity was allegedly found at a home owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.
The Humane Society of the United States sent a letter to Goodell on Thursday, calling on the NFL to “collaborate with us in an organized effort to eradicate animal cruelty and illegal animal fighting activity from the ranks of the NFL.”
“We believe that the current situation involving Michael Vick is indicative of a larger subculture within the NFL of dog fighting and other forms of violence against animals,” wrote Wayne Pacelle, chief executive officer of the Humane Society.
Here’s the rest. I’ve written about this issue before here and here, by the way. Having professional athletes embrace dog-fighting makes young men want to emulate them. And that just perpetuates a cycle of cruelty.
It also makes it ever-more-difficult to protect pit bulls from cruelty and from those who’d seek to ban the breed, not the deed.
Bright spot: Last week President Bush signed a bill to toughen federal laws against dog-fighting and cock-fighting.

Bright spot: Last week President Bush signed a bill to toughen federal laws against dog-fighting and cock-fighting. ___________
This is some very wonderful news during a tough time for humane and aware peoples fighting the “pet food recall” battle.
This news will help bring pit bulls, who are so abused by sick and depraved human beings, out of their dark corners into the light of day.
I once owned a pit bull, and she was the smartest and most loyal of dogs. I love this breed so much!
Maybe there is hope for a better mankind and a better world for all creatures on this earth.
