Pet-food recall: More recalls — yes, more recalls — text of Durbin amendment … and Mars buys Nutro

May 2, 2007

  • If you have a sick pet or a question on your pet’s health, call your veterinarian.
  • If you’re new to the site, please check out our general information page (includes information on recalled foods).
  • If you want to report a sick or deceased pet, click here.

First and foremost, we have more recalls. From the PetSmart Web site:

Update as of May 2, 2007
Menu Foods has expanded its recall as a result of the ongoing investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration into wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten. Menu Foods expanded the recall to include cuts and gravy and other select products which do not include the wheat gluten suspected to be tainted with melamine but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that suspect wheat gluten was used at that plant. The expanded recall includes an additional 20 items carried at PetSmart, including wet dog and cat food by Authority, Award, Sophistacat and Nutro. An updated list of the products recalled by Menu Foods, including this addition, is available at the Menu Foods website.

For complete information regarding this investigation, please visit the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site at www.fda.gov.

Here’s the complete list of products carried by PetSmart that are part of the recall, which includes the updated information.

If you feed any of your own pets these foods, be sure to stop immediately and switch to an alternative.

Menu Foods – 1-866-463-6738 (www.menufoods.com)

The Menu Foods media release:

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(May 2, 2007) - Menu Foods

Attention Business/Financial Editors

Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Menu Foods is now expanding the recall to include cuts and gravy and select other products which do not include ChemNutra wheat gluten but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used at that plant, to the extent they have not already been subject to a recall, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. Menu Foods has received a report from a customer and has received study results, both of which indicate cross-contamination.

As a result, Menu advises the public:

- Additional items in the United States and Canada have been added to the recall list as shown below. A further two varieties for Europe have been added to the recall list.

- The recall dates of those products previously recalled have been modified to include all dates during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used in the applicable Menu plant. All of these products, including the expanded dates, have previously been withdrawn from the market and should already be off the retailer shelves.

Menu estimates that this additional recall represents less than 5% of the products that have already been recalled or withdrawn.

Emphasis ours. Europe. Hello, EU!

***

And regarding the earlier amendment added to the FDA funding bill, Sen. Durbin’s office has sent over a note and the amendments. Here’s the actual text of the amendment, and here’s the section by section. Davis Lazarus of Sen. Durbin’s office notes:

Wanted you to see this. [Here] is the media release. Attached is the amendment. Two handwritten changes were made. Thank you all so much for your input and work on this. It was tremendously helpful.

If you need any more arguments in favor of the FDA getting mandatory recall authority — which the amendment didn’t include at the end — go to the top of this post and start over.

**

Don’t even know what to make of this one:

Mars, Incorporated today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire the global pet food operations of Nutro Products Inc., a leading manufacturer of high nutrition, high performance dog and cat foods sold in pet specialty and farm and feed stores. Closing of the purchase of Nutro from funds advised by Bain Capital Partners LLC, a global private investment firm, is subject to normal regulatory approvals which are expected to be completed within a few months. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The transaction will bring together two of the most recognized names in the petcare industry. Nutro will operate as a stand-alone organization within the Mars family of companies and will maintain its commitment to the pet specialty channel.

Mars snapped up Greenies last year when the maker of those popular treats was struggling with bad PR after some highly publicized dog deaths and subsequent lawsuit.

  1. Nice stealth bomb Menu dropped here. I don’t see a single peep on the main wires yet.

  2. I’ll bet Mars snapped up Nutro really cheap! I will never do business with Nutro again (or Mars by association).

  3. Mars is buying Nutro?

    Goodbye!

    Comment by Steve — May 2, 2007 @ 5:43 pm

  4. As an FYI, I still have cans of the newly recalled Nutro kitten food. They supposedly do NOT contain any glutens or rice proteins (that’s if you can believe their labels or their website). So maybe this really was cross-contamination.

Also, my leftover cans are dated SEP 27 09 which may be why I lucked out & my cats are alright. The recall dates listed for the 3 newly recalled kitten varieties are DEC 06 09 thru JAN 24 10.

  5. This latest news only reinforces the importance of knowing which manufacturers are making which brands. If the mfg. is unknown, then the product is not safe.

  14. The four Natural Ultramix cat foods recalled today don’t have wheat gluten or RPC in them. Not that the can labels mean anything though. They say they have potato starch and brewers rice flour. I think this may be it for me. I’m going to have to be locked up. With padded walls.

  18. When Nutro called me on 4/12, the guy was asking me all kinds of questions, pumping me for information, such as which varieties my cats ate, did they all contain wheat gluten(?!@#), and on and on. He told me my cats must not have eaten any tainted product, otherwise they would have shown symptoms within 3 days of eating it.

I really ripped into him for their not proactively recalling ALL their products with wheat gluten immediately (this was before the rice protein was announced). I suspect THEY KNEW it was not just the food with wheat gluten, otherwise, why so many questions, and why asking me repeatedly if each flavor had wheat gluten in it? I remember telling him it’s your product, don’t you know what’s in it?

    Comment by catlover — May 2, 2007 @ 6:03 pm

  19. thank you catlover, they should know what’s in their products.

    Comment by Eskie Lover — May 2, 2007 @ 6:07 pm

  20. When a VC is into a company like Bain is into Nutro, the VC’s make the decisions and not the company executives any more. And it’s only the assets of Nutro, not the stock, that’s being sold to Mars. So the VC’s pulled the plug to avoid the lawsuits/liabilities because if Mars just buys the assets they don’t assume the liabilities.

    Comment by Nabiya — May 2, 2007 @ 6:10 pm

  21. Steve
I was wondering how long it would take Baine to bail.
Wondering too how long it would take Nutro to catch up with their crap. Guess they needed more money.
Henderson just keeps digging that hole deeper and deeper.
Henderson probably wasn’t counting on the lawyer to squeal or that Rescue 4 newsclip to reveal how “clean” the plant is. 8)

  23. I fed my beautiful six year old cat Nutro pouch food as a snack. He became terribly, horribly sick and I had to have him put to sleep - it was one of the most traumatic and sorrowful moments of my life. I trusted Nutro and they betrayed my trust. I will NEVER buy a Nutro product again or a product from any company associated with Nutro or Menu Foods.

The pet food industry sold an image that was a monstrous lie while they suckled on greed. We pet owners must stop feeding their insatiable, unethical, immoral greed.

Mars can have them - a match made in …, you know where.

johny, the 1st symptoms are drinking and peeing alot. But even if no symptoms, they can have the crystals in their urine. To be safe (and to ease your mind) you may want to bring your cat in for a urinalysis, and possibly bloodwork too. It shows up in the urinalysis first. I can try to find the link for you that explains this.

I think all the ceo’s & cfo’s of all these pet food companies should come to a banquet put on by pet owners from pet connection & itchmo…..it’ll be a pot luck….the main course will be melachicken, with cuts & gravy mixed into the stuffing, melamashed potatoes, cyagreen beans & not sure about dessert yet. I’m sure we can bake up some melachocolate chip cookies or perhaps melachocolate pudding. Boy, would that make my day…..

I wonder how many in our illustrious government have been given a list of pet foods to avoid, chicken to avoid & Lord knows what else. You don’t think they’re being kept in the dark & fed BS, do you?

Will this ever end? I’m so afraid for all of our pets…..stress level rising.

The FDA is declining imports from China on “Wheat Gluten, Rice Gluten, Rice Protein, Rice Protein Concentrate, Corn Gluten, Corn Gluten Meal, Corn By-Products, Soy Protein, Soy Gluten, Proteins (includes amino acids and protein hydrosylates, Mung Bean Protein”…does the hydrosylates mean meat tenderizers? Look for these items in the “human foods”….Are we looking at 1/3 of the food on the shelves at grocery stores being contaminated???? This is what I was informed of today. Looks like we need to start asking the staff at the grocery store, when picking up our groceries, reading the ingredient lists, and “Are any of these ingredients (listed or not listed) from China received before the U.S.declining imports. I did that last night, and the staff went to their manager to get the answer. Watch out for the reduced prices and sales on products!

  56. Regarding the “urine crystals” if you can catch some urine at midstream in a white or clear cup from your beloved dog, then put some in a very clean container, sealed, put it in the refrigerator. Then keep a little in the cup you collected, let it dry for a few hours, most likely you may see the crystals or sediment. If you see this, take the sample from the refrigerator to your veterinarian and get the blood work as well as the UA, UA C&S. If your vet appt is for the next day, get another urine sample the next day to take along with your appt. as well as what you collected the day before. The lab work and updates are on the antechdiagnostics website.

I had written to them more than a month ago, asking various questions…no reply.

They have lost this customer, too. It’s funny how these corporations who count on us to buy their products have no problem deceiving us.

I’ve been giving them canned gormet Fancy Feast, alternated with Meow Mix in foil pacs, also baby meat, human canned turkey and chicken. But today i went to grocery store and bought ingredients to start cooking for my cats. I have to go to health food store tomorrow to get last few items. I’ll probably keep on letting them have a little dry Evo but hope to switch them mostly to home-cooked, alternating between several fairly easy cat food recipes i discovered. Heck, they’ll probably end up healthier than me!

Friskies is bad food as far as I can tell. Could be melamine or maybe just junk, plain old crapy food.

Been discussing it over at Itchmo and others think Fancy feast is just as bad. http://64.79.216.38/~itchmo/fo.....opic=200.0

Also seen a lot of bad comments about Beneful.

All are from the same company: Purina

Just change their food; its not worth the risk…

    Comment by Peggy — May 2, 2007 @ 7:26 pm

  72. As catlover mentioned above, for anyone worried that their pet ate the tainted food, dont depend on just the BUN and creatinine blood work, a urinalyis NEEDS to be done. Many or most pets have normal blood work, it shows in the urinalysis.

  76. Here’s another thought about the human food chain. I’ve been supplementing a couple of jars of baby food a week while I’m transitioning mine to an all raw diet. I noticed most of the Gerber jar foods have cornstarch listed. I emailed Gerber and phoned them twice now, asking where they source the corn starch from. I have researched cornstarch and found that China is our biggest supplier of corn starch. This is from one of many Chinese websites selling cornstarch:
    Product Name: Cornstarch
    Place of Origin: China
Cornstarch is a white powder product derived from corn, by dipping in, breaking up, separation, refining and drying, which composes two kinds of macromolecules of amylopectin and amylose. It is widely used for the industries such as food, medicine, plastic and fermentation..

Used for plastic? Have we hard that before?

  77. Castor and Pollux are one of the brands in the new recall. From their website from before this recall:

“Question: Do you attend production runs of Organix and Ultramix products?
Answer: Yes. One of our owners attends production runs; in fact, we just returned from the most recent run of our Organix canned formulas.”

Not to pick on this company in particular, but it just confirms what has been said here all along. Just because a company says it’s watching over the production doesn’t mean it’s safe.

  80. What I find laughable is how the media report this as “one of the biggest pet food recalls in U.S. history”.

Isn’t this THE biggest? If not, then why not say it’s “the biggest recall since the xyz brand recall in 19—”.

Or how they say Menu Foods has sued “another company”, as if we don’t know which one that is :)

Or the continual BS about “16” or “18” deaths. That’s so old it’s not worth repeating, regardless of how understated it is.

(And who are the 2 ginuea pigs who keep getting put in and left out?)

Or how it “only affects 1% of pet food”. It sure seems like more than 1% to me, certainly from a risk standpoint, even if less than 1% of the pet population has confirmed illnesses and death so far.

    Media are spineless today.

I’m just saying it is not worth the risk.

Please remember about the spinach and peanut butter; these problems were know for a long time before they finally pulled those contaminated products. Nestle-Purina is just as huge as these other companies.
If Purina thinks they can sell their crap and that they are ‘safe’ from being found out, well then, they can keep selling their crap. nobody can stop them.

I’m trying to say that we don’t have to wait for some recall that may never come. Just stop feeding the Purina Foods. It is not worth the risk!

BUT the vet said he has been seeing just as many blocked FEMALES as males. Females have a much wider urinary tract, so less likely to block. The crystals were HUGE

Good God, why not shut your plants down for a few days, recall your stock, destroy your inventory, clean your machines, have everything inspected and then open back up for business?

Their business strategy is suicidal and I just don’t understand who is driving the boat here.

Was I an alarmist when I said not to trust Nutro when the first recall came out? I still have those cans sitting on my desk that made my cat sick and they didn’t recall them ‘til weeks later.
I’m not a trusting person, but I do trust my gut instincts.
And I don’t believe in coincidences either. I like to connect dots.
A holiday and a big sale may seem like a coincidence but remember, these recalls have been known long before announced.
These aren’t exactly honest people we’re dealing with here.
I still remember all the “sales” of the very same foods that were recalled and still on the shelves until some of us did something about it.
As for me I trust no one until I know they are honest. I have four friends I would trust my life with. And that’s sad to say. Honesty doesn’t seem to be a virtue anymore. 8)

Does this mean that the VC walks away with no liability? So, is anyone liable? Stockholders? Somehow I won’t really be surprised if this is true.

My dog died 3 weeks ago - Nutro dry, but not quickly like the pets who ate the contaminated melamine food. He was at the vet so many times last year with diarrhea and lethargy and they just kept assuming it had to do with Lyme disease he had four years ago and kept putting him on 6 wk courses of doxycycline. I’ve been doing some research and think that Nutro has two problems - melamine in the recalled products - fungus or mold in the dry. The doxycycline probably kept the fungus at bay until his kidneys just couldn’t take it anymore. I never thought it was the food until just before he died and I gave the remainder of the bag to my vet and his dog got really sick. Nutro knows. They’ve just slipped under the radar with this other problem.

  100. This was filed by Menu Foods on April 26, 2007. You can find it on http://www.sedar.com

    APRIL 26, 2007
    TORONTO, ONTARIO
    Attention Business/Financial Editors
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration today conducted a search of Menu Foods’ plant in
Emporia, Kansas. Menu Foods has been advised by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of
Kansas that Menu Foods is the target of a misdemeanor investigation into whether the Food,
Drug & Cosmetic Act has been violated.
“Menu Foods has been doing everything it can to cooperate with the FDA,” said Menu Foods’
CEO Paul Henderson. “Even before commencement of this investigation we have given the
FDA full access to our plant and our records, have answered questions and provided documents
to them any time they have asked. Throughout this process Menu Foods has worked
cooperatively with regulators and others to identify and address issues relating to pet food
    safety.”
Menu Foods is one of several businesses affected by the wrongful addition of melamine to
Chinese wheat gluten sold in the United States. Wheat gluten containing melamine was
furnished to Menu Foods and others by a U.S. supplier, ChemNutra, which obtained it from
    China.
Under the U.S. Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act, the sale of any adulterated food may be a
misdemeanor, even if the seller did not intend to adulterate the food.
Menu Foods was also advised today by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western
District of Missouri that that office has commenced a similar investigation focused on Menu
    Foods and ChemNutra.

  105. Cathy, Nutro is a privately held company. If the VC’s sell the assets and not the stock, the company becomes a shell with no net worth. There’s nothing to sue them for, there’s nothing to gain. Mars, on the other hand, doesn’t legally assume any liabilities when they don’t purchase the stock.

Hutton and Archer Daniels Midland. Not to mention Judge Cashell and his hooligans from Kilgore and Longview, TX. (Personal experience with that judge).
Whether the store’s were aware or not there were certainly those in the know who said nothing knowing a holiday was coming.
There were those who knew this stuff was bad when they sold it for feed. And there were those who knew it was bad when it was shipped almost a year ago.
Why would they all wait to come forward when it was obvious something was wrong as far back as March.
Those who bought the scrap food to turn into feed knew it in March. Why didn’t they come forward?
No one is being honest about anything. Everyone is waiting until the last second to say anything.
Name someone who went out of their way to get tested without being prompted by complaints. We’ve been complaining a long time and have been met with silence.

Earlier this month, Monsanto complained to the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Committee about the proliferation of labels with language such as “Our Farmers’ Pledge: No Artificial Growth Hormones,” as found on milk sold by Oakhurst Dairy in Portland, Maine.

Monsanto says this scares consumers into thinking there’s something unhealthy about its human-made recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) or by the Monsanto brand name, Posilac, now in about one-third of American dairy cows…”

Also, we attended a webinar last week by IDEXX who are reporting the same thing. The recommendation *used to be* watch your pet for symptoms, then see your vet. The latest, best advice is to have your pet tested right away if your pet has eaten any of the recalled food whether you are seeing symptoms or not.

The sooner they are treated, the better. In addition, they should be retested 3-4 weeks later to check for rising creatine levels even within normal range. We are treating a case like this also.

I agree. A quite large supermarket by me has only three (3) brands of wet dog food on the shelves. All of the blank spots left from the pulled cans & pouches have been replaced with bags and bags of dry.

I saw the shelves just after the can & pouch pulls, and the aisle looked like a street in an abandoned town. Even the white shirt & tie manager with his perfectly creased pants was on his knees stocking dry bags of food to fill in the huge void.

Maybe the 1% statistic is valid if every food production run since 1991, when the “spiking” industry began in China, is counted!

***Quote from several posts above - Can’t find poster’s name now - Sorry**

Anyone uncovered if Mars (Pedigree) has any deaths associated w/ their pet foods? We fed our two 1/4 can a day of a palate we bought at Sam’s Club of Pedigree canned. Added to the toxic Nutro Dry (because mine hated the Nutro sawdust that was marketed as being healthy, wunnerful food).

Thank you good fairy for beginning your probe on Monsanto. The boogers have these seeds that are supposed to kill insects. Roundup is the Registered formula. Most farmers unwittingly are using these to grow their crops. Monsanto dominates the market on seeds for crops and even garden seeds.

Anyway, these killer seeds are killing bees all over the world. No bees, no pollination.

Another bonus for Monsanto. These seeds are the kind the farmers can’t reuse as in the seeds produced from the tainted plants are sterile and cannot be brought forth to plant a new crop.

Soooo now what? We are going to have a pickle figuring out what seeds we can use to grow our own food. What poor farmers are using these seeds that makeup our food supply ingredients?

We love Monsanto! OH YES WE DO!

So we are a buncha hippie fanatics now huh? Food Terr0rists? Pet Rights Terr0rists?

So now Monsanto is after a company that advertises they don’t use their killer hormones?

Bad lil company, bad. How could you go against the food supplier to the world of additives and seeds?

  138. RE: Kathi on low prices: chicken, pork, pet food

The prices on chicken are extremely low this week. Cinco de Mayo sales have never been advertised in a large geographic area around here due to having much less diversity than other areas. “Barbecue Season” in my area doesn’t kick off till Memorial Day weekend. THEN you see good sales on chicken and pork ribs. I’m glad to say that I’ll be sitting these Memorial Day sales out this year, at least from buying meats from regular supermarkets.

This week, the chicken breasts (boneless/skinless) are at RECORD LOWS at $1.49 per pound. Never has the price been this low, or I would have noticed in the past and would have bought 40 - 50 lbs. at once and frozen them.

When I buy 15 - 20 lbs. at a time, I buy at the sale price of $1.99, the best price offered around here. Only once have I seen them for $1.89.

Kathi, I’m also seeing huge sales on pet food. In fact, there was a full 2-page spread, as a taller than normal-sized insert, in one supermarket’s flyer this week. The larger sized paper insert sticking out of the top of the flyer definitely got my attention… NOT to buy the food.

Just be critical readers and consumers. Read what’s there and also what’s not there. Both are telling.

  147. Hello,

I’m not sure is this the proper place to post this. But I want others to know what I’m going through with “Natural Balance”. My dogs were eating their canned fish/sweet potato until the “Menu Foods” recall. The only canned food at Pet-Co by Natural Balance was venison/rice. My dogs are used to eating a varied diet, but once on this they developed extreme gas to the point that my older rottie was very ill.

I called the company on April 13th., in the am to report this and was told the canned was not being recalled because rice protein concentrate WAS NOT in it. But I still wanted to let them know what was happening. Customer service was suppose to call me back that day, no call. I emailed about 5 times since then, received one reply from the east coast sales director who said he would get back to me very quickly as it was his personal email address and not corporate. He never did get back to me. Through another email list I found another employee’s email and send one to her. She did reply and referred me back to their website for further updates.

My cat has been eating their regular dry cat food formula for years now. I am concerned about cross-contamination (which I thought of before this new recall), but they keep saying it is OK. Why has my cat now decided he does not want to eat their dry cat food? That is telling me something right there.

I have been researching for alternatives to their food, dogs maybe California Natural canned fish (or back to homemade) and Houdini has been eating raw striper fish and raw chicken right now. The fish he always loved and gets that about 2 times a week. But for him to be eating any other raw type of meat is not usual. Please be careful if you are feeding Natural Balance Original Dry Cat Food Formula. My gut is telling me something is wrong with it. Houdini is telling me that too.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I want the word out there. American Nutrition did answer my email about how they process the foods, Natural Balance is saying American Nutrition put rice protein concentrate in their foods without their knowledge and American Nutrition is saying their make the food according to Natural Balance’s recipe…hmmmmm

Also, could you direct me to the correct place to post this?

  148. People, wake up, this isn’t just about our dogs and cats anymore- FDA and USDA is banning *all* food imports and ingredients from China untile further notice- at least one major teaching hospital has stopped using soy-based baby formulas for newborns because of fear of melamine contamination, and protein shakes used to put weight on human cancer patients including Ensure contain potentially contaminated soy and grain products whose point of origin we don’t know, and no one is testing them for melamine either- and how about the tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of chickens fed on contaminated grain? This is about the danger to our entire food supply, and oncologists and neonate hospitals might not be picking up on a problem because babies and people with chronic illness would be expected to have kidney problems anyway- Not only do you need to watch what you feed your animals, watch what you’re eating and what you’re giving to your babies, the chronically ill, and the elderly. And China has been doing this for a long time, people should be looking for long-term rises in kidney disease, not just short-term

    Comment by Tidsy — May 3, 2007 @ 7:53 am

  150. I’m getting so paranoid. 3 of my 4 cats’ bloodwork was done back in January for various reasons - one is getting older so wanted a baseline for kidney values, etc. One stopped eating the various canned foods (some of them recalled foods)I was trying to gete my CRF cat to eat. A week later my CRF cat caught a cold and wasn’t eating so they checked her kidney values. My boy who stopped eating his bloodwork came back normal except his blood count indicated maybe he had been fighting an infection. Now I worry that the bloodwork may have been useless. We did have someone urinate outside the litterbox about a month ago. We tried to figure out who it was with no luck.

Oh, none of my cats will touch wet food anymore. Doesn’t matter what brand - even Innova. My husband told me I am being ultra sensitive to my cats’ every move. He says they are fine. Already having one with kidney failure I am so afraid I will miss something in one of my other cats.

This is why mainstream print and broadcast media are reporting a much lesser story than this pet food & human food crisis is.

Also, remember the female FDA vet/scientist who “whistleblew” on a drug that was killing dogs and wanted it removed from the market and was “reassigned” to taking care of monkeys and rats? Does anyone have the link or her name? She later won a “Vet of the Year” award.

Important paragraphs from the livescience . com article on rBST in milk & Monsato strong-arming broadcast media referenced by Aunt Granny above.

“Monsanto was aggressive about rBGH from the get-go and infamously stopped a Fox news affiliate in Florida in the early 1990s from broadcasting a report on it, which most consumers knew nothing about because of the lack of labeling. When the reporters, Jane Akre and Steve Wilson, refused to yield, Fox fired them.

Ultimately the plan backfired after the reporters successfully sued Fox under the Florida whistle-blower law and eventually won the 2001 International Goldman Environmental Prize.”

    Breaking news
    May 3, 2007 (11:25 am CDT)
Menu Foods adds to recall list

Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Menu Foods is now expanding the recall to include cuts and gravy and select other products which do not include ChemNutra wheat gluten but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used at that plant, to the extent they have not already been subject to a recall, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. Menu Foods has received a report from a customer and has received study results, both of which indicate cross-contamination.

Menu Foods currently lists at least 220 products being added today to its existing list of recalled products as of 11:25 am CDT. Please be advised that the Menu Foods list appears to be changing throughout the day; concerned pet owners should check either the Menu Foods Web site or the AVMA Web site frequently for updates to this information.

  177. I was grocery shopping today at our local Walmart. People were carrying out 2 and 3 big pork roasts at a time. Yup pork was on sale.

I also received a reply from Butterball about their ground turkey.
“As you are aware, a nationwide recall is being conducted on pet food containing wheat gluten imported from China. The wheat gluten is contaminated with the chemical melamine and has been associated with the death of several cats and dogs.” SEVERAL…. SEVERAL amazing

“The nutritionists at Butterball formulate feed specifically for our birds, taking into account bird age, the location of the farm and the time of year the bird is being fed. We have conducted a thorough review of the feed ingredients and suppliers and determined that no grains or protein-based ingredients used in the blending of feed for growing Butterball turkeys has been imported from China. In fact, Butterball, LLC does not formulate feed using wheat, rice or corn gluten ingredients.”

Not I’m not celebrating but hopefully both Perdue and Butterball were telling the truth and we won’t starve this month. No Tyson chicken patties for the people in the house this month. Guess the dogs will be getting no store brand chicken just Perdue and they already only eat Butterball ground turkey.

The chicken breasts and pork chops were half the usual prices and way below the regular sales prices even during any other holidays throughout the year. That sale had nothing to do with whatever holiday was mentioned above that we don’t celebrate around here. Don’t know if that holiday has anything to do with the world May Day celebrations or not. But the point is those sale prices happened just days before the PUBLIC announcement yet the problem was known on April 3.
The pattern of “SALES” is the same as with the pet food sales just before each weekly recall.
I would invite anyone disagreeing with this to go back through the past blogs and read about this “SALE” issue and the public recalls. 8)

I guess retailers are only lowering prices to offload contaminated product (which somehow they knew of weeks in advance). Instead of trying to win customers with new promotions or trying new pricing strategies. Or trying new loss leader items.

Icouldn’t find them either. Phil from England said they would be in grams instead of ounces. There are a few in grams, so maybe they might be the EU products that don’t say specifically Canada.
It would be nice if they were more clear about the products on the lists.
But, hey, that’s been the problem all along.
Of course, we’re the ones who are confused and hysterical!!! 8)

  187. No doubt! I think my vet things i’m being hysterical. They just have that uncanny way of looking at you that tells you, “Lady, you’re being ridiculous.” Not to mention family members think I’m cuckoo and paranoid. I say, “Whatever” because so far all the information I’ve sent them was before it was even publicly released. I have stopped emailing them with updates. I told them not to be surprised if it ended up in the human food source. But I’M the crazy one….LOL. Go figure!

  190. Melamine fried chicken… Cyanuric acid roast pork. Solving the Social Security budget problem one senior at a time.

FDA says melamine feed chickens don’t pose any risk to humans. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking.

Neoplastic and preneoplastic lesions induced by melamine in rat urothelium are modulated by dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids.
