A rather interesting write up on sulfa contaminated meat products going to renderers in Canada:

http://www.cattle.guelph.on.ca/communications/positions/Sulfa%20residues.htm

Sulfa drugs are, as the medicos like to say, nephrotoxic (kills kidneys). A little more research
suggested that some sulfa crystals are not unlike those pictured on the University of Guelph site.
I thought it was interesting enough to write a note to the folks at the U of G. I received a very
nice reply in return explaining they had already checked for sulfa contamination, as well as most
other common nephrotoxins.

Personally, I think it would be a useful public service if the various labs would publish more details
on the research they are doing. Even if the information was somewhat technical, just having some of
the negative results would be better than nothing. I don't believe I'm alone in being frustrated at
not having a lot more information after a month and a half of ongoing research. A great deal of what
the US media is pumping out is misinformation. There is no evidence whatsoever that melamine is the
toxin causing the problems, and all available existing studies eliminate any possibility it could be.
The most often repeated lie is that aminopterin was never independently confirmed. The New York lab,
Cornell and the U of G all found aminopterin in food samples. The problem is it is not consistent with
the melamine from China spin.

The bottom line is the rendering industry is operated in such a slip shod fashion that it is
impossible to imagine, with all the testing being done, that a laundry list of trace toxins have not
been identified.

In the mean time, I feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette everytime I pick up cat food at the store.

"and so was the idea that I was asking permission to use email or private message when it suits my purpose. I do not now, nor will I ever require permission or approval to do what I think best."

I have no idea what you area talking about, apparently I missed an episode or two. Makes no dif in the long run.

MaKo, I am totally relaed and don't have much interest in debating irrelevant stuff on this forum.

Now back to stuff that matters...it's one thing if all different pet food companies whose food was made in all different places claimed ignorance. However, when one manufacturer makes all of the food, it is not so far fetched that it is the manufacturer and not the individual companies. They all didn't get together and come up with a story, and they are further supported by what the FDA found at ANI. Not to mention that ANI has admitted to the FDA that they were doing this, using the excuse of 'industry practice'.

Were companies like BB trying to hide anything, they would not have dumped ANI but would have tried to smooth things over with some spin and then kept ANI as their manufacturer. They wouldn't risk their entire company on a lie, knowing ANI could wipe them out.

Everybody, please relax.

We all have enough stress and sorrow and angst and worries, we do not need to go at each other's throats.

In dubio pro reo:
If Blue Buffalo was convinced, absolutely sure, that *his* formula does not contain any of the tainted (or suspected) products then he had no reason to grill the manufacturer about it.

In this case his anger is appropriate and understandable.

What makes me uneasy is that sooooo many of the 'food brands' all claim now innocence, ignorance or ...what is that other word that starts with i, like idiot?... and with some it really sounds wrong and shrill and makes me roll my eyes.

In this hot climate of betrayal and distrust it is easy to bite anyone and anything, even if at a calmer time certain reactions would make sense.

Therefore, please, everybody relax: we have enough opposition out there (media, politics, business interests, ignorance...) and for our own and our pets sake it is more important to concentrate on them and not go off an tangent.

Thank you for listening :)

Yes the lawsuit was nonsense and so was the idea that I was asking permission to use email or private message when it suits my purpose. I do not now, nor will I ever require permission or approval to do what I think best.

There were people I wanted to talk to privately, and I wanted them to know where to reach me.

I figured, rightly, that they would be too shy to do it here, I had no idea they were too dumb to catch on.

The whole lot of em are just babes in the woods,it is a burning wonder no one has sold em a sack of magic beans yet!
But we are working it out.

And I find it repulsive that anyone would find joy in the fact that a company that had previously not had any items recalled now finds themselves in the middle of one. No matter how much anyone dislikes these companies, there is no glee to be found.

And BTW, now that Blue pulled their entire inventory of canned products and biscuits, I am willing to bet that other companies will be start following suit. Otherwise they look bad.

E. Hamilton:

I stand by my post and did not have any lapses in anything.

As for the lawsuit nonsense, again that's a matter of opinion. They had a valid point and were trying to protect their company from being associated with the recall. I don't see why it's been blown so out of proportion. They were doing what any other company would have done given the circumstances. To me, that letter from their legal counsel was easily ignored but instead the majority chose to jump all over it and run with it.

Everyone needs to move forward and do what it takes to resolve this.

Carole
If the Blue CEO had no idea what was going into his food and is shocked and upset and betrayed, then I guess he knows how we have all felt for MONTHS.
We trusted and got screwed, he did too. Happened to him ONCE, how many times has it happened to us?
He threatened a lawsuit and got all ballsy and that did not earn him a whole lot here.
So maybe you should go reread the post you are complaining about, where I said he could get some slack from ME and I sure hope he gets the hint better than you did!
I have a clue how easy he got fooled.
Let me lay it out for you.
If Blue Boy gets on the news and says he was as badly betrayed as we were, if he tells just a teensy bit of OUR story and gets in some quotes about how many deaths there REALLY are, and the stuff about what pet owners need to know about drinking too much water being a really bad sign, some combo of say, two out of three of those things, the too much water stuff HAS to be said, then *I* will fight tooth and nail for the guy and his company. It is THAT important that the news gets out.
He does not even have to do it himself, he can hire it done.
Now I am not too thrilled with you either right now because I consider that this is a nice freaking offer, all things and the ballsy lawsuit considered, and my plain hatred for the fact that hell NO none of the pet food companies have been proactive or I would not be here saying this needs to get done 6 weeks into this mess-a decent company would have done the right thing a long time ago.
But tempers are running hot, when you pile enough death and stress and betrayal up on people that will naturally happen, and we are all pretty tired. So I am going to give you a chance to go reread the post I made, the onetime only olive branch that Blue Boy ought to be down on his knees giving thanks for getting from me.
I am going to consider that you had a "lapse" in reading skills for a little bit and see how this shakes out. Better than that it aint gonna get.

I am going to consider that you had a “lapse” in reading skills for a little bit and see how this shakes out. Better than that it aint gonna get.

I understand how you feel. But information needs to flow freely and not be hidden. I have learned so much here. Also, I have been able to share that information with my vets who had no knowledge, only what they read in local papers.

If the food companies, etc. are monitoring this site. Good. They need to know we are upset, angry, and willing to inform the public about how we have been deceived.

I think that PFI and FDA, etc. thought this would blow over, 16 deaths,no big deal. But the blogs have pushed it into the limelight. I saw more people in the grocery store looking over labels. The fish case now shows country of origin. I haven't bought commercial pet food for 30 days - my vet now doesn't want to recommend what to feed! These are little steps.

We need to keep questioning, calling, writing, etc. and keep this issue alive. The blog has provided us with the means to do this. Our furry kids are counting on us.

Yes, Carole, thanks for the words of sanity. I can't imagine what it must be like to be trying to run a pet food company at this point. I will say that what I'd like to see, from every company, is a letter from the President or CEO on their front page telling their customers where they get their ingredients from, how much control they have in processing (visit the plant, present during production runs, personally test food) and whether or not they've tested all their glutens/vegetable proteins for melamine if they were not grown and processed in the US. I would also like to see a commitment to not changing food without changing the label - today - not next year, this needs to be done now.

Steve said: The question is - how much more damage will the Menu Foods Cartel wreak beyond what it has already wreaked?

According to that excellent story on the history of Menu Foods, I think we can also thank Wal Mart for our current mess. Everyone wants a WalMart account, so WalMart runs the show. They routinely treat their vendors like cr*p because they know they'll have to suck up to keep the account. They routinely dictate terms cuz they're big and if MenuFoods wasn't so busy cutting costs to keep the account, well, then this wouldn't have been so widespread.
