What's really worrying me about the SD is the corn gluten. There's a lot of it in Hill's, both its Prescription and Non-prescription diets. They've found melamine in corn gluten in South Africa. Are they checking for it here? I'd feel better if I knew they were. But I have a sinking feeling Hills and the rest of these folks have NO interest in testing their foods unless the FDA is holding a figurative gun to their head.

You know, what sickens me is ALL the LIES from these companies! When the 1st recall bagan and I decided to switch to Natural Balance, I called them first. I asked them if ANY of their products used in their foods get imported from China. They assured me that ALL their products were grown in the US only! I said I was very worried about any imported product from China...they said they understand completely and that is why they only use US products and ALL food are human grade...hmmm, so rice gluten with melamine is human grade...and not from China.....PROVEN WRONG and LYING!

I am now using Fromm's Dry food and weaning my cats to Nature's Variety Raw food. If anyone has any suggestions about these foods, please let me know. Also, what do you all think about Prowl by The Honest Kitchen?

I just read that press release from Wilbur Ellis. First of all, if you had a bunch of white bags & a pink one marked "melamine", would you pick that bag to add to pet food? Oh, puuulllleeezzz, are we really that stupid to believe that one. Why they chose that story is beyond me....makes no sense at all.

The fact that they lied about when they received that rpc also tells you what kind of a corporation they are. The first story was July....that tells us that the rpc could've been used last year which would account for pets dying long before this recall. Then you notice they changed it to April.....so we'll think they just got it.

Give me a ******* break......

Just because they say it doesn't make it so. We've already seen proof of that with other companies.

Laura & Sharon: I'm not a Hills SD fan, either, but they put a notice on their website yesterday stating that none of their products contain contaminated rice protein from Wilbur-Ellis,

Sandi K and Eskie Lover: I think that the big, national animal charities have dug themselves a hole by nearly ignoring this tragedy. I'm sure they get money from various pet food companies and figure they don't want to bite the (big) hand that feeds them, and that's why they haven't made a stink about it. HSUS emails me for donations all the time, so they could blast a warning about pet foods to the same email list, but they choose not to. I understand the choice not to donate to them. But I agree that smaller, local animal charities are the ones that probably need extra help after this, since they keep having to put aside food that they have purchased or has been donated for the maintenance of their animals. I personally donate to a local pet rescue organization from which I previously adopted a cat. I know what kind of work they do because I have seen it firsthand, and I know they aren't on the "take" from the pet food industry.

As for what to feed... After having to give up on New Balance, I'm using Wellness Core Protein for now. No grains, and the cats absolutely love it. I'm not really pleased about patting a company on the back who uses Menu (and they aren't getting any Wellness wet for that reason), but it seems like the best thing for now with Innova not available in my area. I'm not comfortable with relying on mail order to feed my cats, since I live in Florida, and deliveries to my house often sit on my porch in extreme heat conditions. So Wellness Core it will be for a while, at least.

Just a quick mention on Wysong. I was all set to buy their urinary health variety for the cats and to my horror one of the ingredients is wheat gluten.

Laura, We should NOT have to wait for a Friday recall again. According to the company's website, they've urged the other brands to recall any foods with their rice protein. I do hope they contacted them and aren't counting on them to read the release though . . .

For all you with ARF and CRF pets, check the Wysong site. They have RX diets and also have supplements for ph and such. There may be some options there.
