Will someone report back how the hearing went. I believe this person will be testifying today in a hearing before Congress...Hope she will be able to shed some light on the problems and have a solution. I think the article says she previously worked a while at Hill's ???Thanks

At this point does anyone out there honestly believe that had they started home cooking for their pets on the day of the first recall their pets would be worse off than continuing to play what is, in effect, Russian Roulette with commercial foods? Reading blog after blog and article after article it is clear that something new started being added to commercial petfoods (wet and dry) around the first of the year. The stories of pet animals having been on a single brand and type of food for years and then getting sick or refusing food from a newly opened bag or can or pouch is just too much of a coincidence to be coincidence!

We're not talking about feeding them a daily diet of big macs and tacos here! Some animals are more willing to accept new foods than others but if we merely feed them healthy food like we eat they will not be poisoned while all these "investigations" continue. Especially for dogs, a couple cups of cooked pasta or potatoes mixed with cooked ground beef, turkey or pork and some soft cooked veggies like beans or carrots and maybe an egg is certainly not going to kill pets. What is on the store shelves might. More complex recipes involving organ meats and other stuff is for the more experienced home cook. Keep it simple for now.

My cats have been eating bitty pieces of white meat of chicken mostly cooked and once in a while raw, and are very happy at mealtime. My oldest cat, as a matter of fact, is spunkier and more playful than he's been for ages. Once or twice a week I may offer them sliced cooked chicken livers or slow cooked beef or pork stew meat flaked and so soft it melts in their mouths along with a little warm meat juice. This can be cooked and frozen into small packets so you're not having to cook every day.

I am also supplementing with a holistic cat and dog food from a small company that I believe to be producing safe product, but it is difficult to get and very costly.

None of this crisis management that we as concerned pet owners must now do (because others did not) is easy or inexpensive. Following this unfolding crisis and taking action has become almost a full time job for some of us. Many people unfortunately have neither the time or resources to to this. A country that loves its animals as we do must demand that safe and cost effective pet food be produced and available to the masses. But for now that it is not the case.

Lil Bear's Momma: I'm interested in 9 Lives Shredded Turkey in Gravy (DelMonte product)canned food also. That's ***exclusively*** what I fed my cat for years!

You may have read an earlier post by me that I emailed & called DelMonte on Fri., March 30, to ask the country of origin of their wheat/wheat gluten and was given evasive, scripted answers that "DelMonte does not procure any FINISHED ingredients from Menu Foods." I told her that I read right through the "weasel words" of saying "finished products," so I asked about **individual** ingredients, and the issue was side stepped. I read through the feeble attempt by DelMonte's spin doctor on the website and told them that I had enough information (the lack thereof) from them to immediately take my cat off of 9 Lives canned food. Just as I expected, the next day, Sat., Mar. 31, DelMonte announced a recall, not of 9 Lives canned, but other items.

My cat is now going to the vet for higher than normal BUN & creatinine levels. Please post your info here as well.

Can anyone direct me to a list of ALL foods made by menu foods (not just recalled foods)? I realize other companies got the wheat gluten, and that some dry food is involved. But this latest recall, after "prompting" by the fda, after a family had food privately tested, just pushed me over the edge. menu knew they had bad wheat gluten on or before March 6 (when they changed suppliers), and 5 weeks later they're still "identifying" where all the bad wheat gluten went?! We need to boycott them until they are so financially destitute they have to sell their plants, hopefully to a company that actually cares about pets' wellbeing.

Although I'm over in the UK, I feel for you all, and I'm really worried that this may spread to the UK and just get covered up. The corporations over here are a lot better at it than in the US :(

I reckon we need a website listing ways we can make home-made pet food from human-fit ingredients. If we cook it ourselves, we'll have a better chance of knowing what's in it.

Meantime, I'm sending an email to all the companies whose food my cat eats, as follows;

"Hi - I'd be grateful if you could confirm that none of your ingredients are sourced from Menu Foods, Nutro or ChemNutra ? A possible cause is Chinese and/or Canadian GM wheat gluten. I'm concerned, as these companies have been involved in the major recall in the US and Canada involving pet foods (latest figure - 39,000 dead cats & dogs).

Thanks for your help !

Sean"

Whether they'll tell the truth or not, I don't know, but it'll be interesting to see what response I get. Meantime, I'm chucking out the supposedly UK-produced Hills & IAMS I've got in the cupboard.

I do not think the problem is just menufoods and I will tell you why.
I lost two cats and that damned sure WAS menufoods and the contaminated pouches and canned food.
But...I have, as of today ( I have to think, yes, today I have them still, it may not be so tomorrow), a large dog who showed almost identical symptoms and she only ate Beneful or Pedigree dry food!
I quit feeding Purina foods, of any kind, and I hope that I quit in time to save the dog. I see the change in her, I saw it within HOURS, she is better and the only change was the food.

Something got loose in the pet food industry, maybe melamine, maybe GM grain, maybe the evil in their shriveled dark hearts leached into the food, I don't know what it is, I don't think THEY know what it is.
It is in the dry food too.
I do know it kills and it hurts and it isn't done yet.

I am not done either.
I don't think I will ever be able to look back on this and laugh but someday, I am going to look back on this and know that I DID something to stop it. Puts me way out front of the pet food industry already and light years beyond a smiling and lying CEO.

I haven't been posting for the last few days as it is Spring Break here and all 6 of my children are home. I am reading posts as often as I can, and now since the brood is sleeping I will post just one tidbit of info I found encouraging this week.

Scouring this site, the net and calling around to every company I could get a number for; I had compiled a list of canned cat food I was willing to give a try with Nick. Well PetCo only carries Natural Balance, which is fine, however Nick will only eat one flavor of their wet (he loves the dry though). I went into Carter's because the Felidae site said that they carried it. Well much to my surprise (and happiness) they also carry Merrick, Chicken Soup, Eagle Pak and a few other "small" brands I was looking into.

The fabulous info though is posted in large, bold face print on every shelf of wet and dry cat/dog food they carry, is a notice saying that although Menu Foods has varieties of pet food not affected by the recall Carter's recommends for the safety of your pets ...DO NOT buy any of the foods Menu makes. Well AMEN to that!
