Can someone out there please please please tell me how I can help my puppy? She is in renal failure and we need help. I'm sure there are many more of us out there that are living with a sick dog now and need to know how we can help our pets/alleviate the discomfort. She's been put on antibiotic because her wbc count went high - she's anemic (low rbc) so we tried putting her on prednisone to boost her system. HELP! None of these are helping, only masking the problems. How do you treat for melamine poisoning??? I don't care about money or venting or revenge or anything else except helping her NOW!!!

I phoned the FDA Thurs. and left a message re my cats death late Nov. They phoned back Friday p.m. and offered condolences, etc. and were very thorough in their investigation. So, please phone the FDA and report your pets illness/death.

Responding to Linda on March 30, 2007 at 3:30 pm,

I can almost guarantee you that we do not know the whole story and something is being held back. Our cat, 10-years old, died on December 5, 2006 of acute renal failure. Our vet was stumped, there were crystals and blockages showing on the x-rays, and one kidney had pretty much failed. The cat had been ill in September, so my wife bought some wet food around Thanksgiving to try and help the cat gain some weight. That wet food was IAMs Select Bites. The vet said we might try doing what some people do for 18 year old cats that have renal failure and administer a saline drip twice a day. We tried the IV drip thing for 5 days, but when we went back to our vet, the blood work showed the problem worse than before..... all along we were feeding her this IAMs Select Bites stuff, but the appetite got weaker and weaker. We had to put her down on Dec 5.

We have 3 other cats, all of which we feed only the dry food. We never thought it could be the food. Now I think we know.

The code dates on our pouches, which we still have, are prior to the recall dates, but it is from the same plant as described in the recall. I'm thinking this goes back farther than the December 3rd date they are publishing.

Here's an interesting article about a dog that apparently was helped by a drug to counteract the effects of aminopterin: http://www.wftv.com/news/11459819/detail.html

did anyone get a pic/photo, printed hand-out of the crystals? This seems like a diagnostic tool that ought to be disseminated pretty quickly so all those vet techs who are doing urinalysis etc can spot it? Maybe already on VIN?

The FDA has to appear to know what's going on. But clearly they don't. They were notified about the "plastic poison" by another dog food company - right?

The FDA has to protect their reputation and appear to know - but in truth - they are clueless.

Personally, I think we don't know the "whole" story. And to trust MENU or the FDA etc is to buy the "eat this apple and nothing will happen" line that started way back when.

We can't be too careful now. Just try to avoid all wheat and their derivatives and byproducts, Gluten, or whatever until we know more.

How do we know the poisoned wheat isn't sitting in a warehouse waiting to be processed and not even the FDA and their sleuthing knows about it? What about other grains?
We can't trust the FDA to be totally on top of this - not really.
