Pet-food recall: NBC Nightly News weighs in
By Gina Spadafori
March 28, 2007
- If you’re new to the site, please check out our general information page.
- If you have lost a pet, we encourage you to learn about pet-loss resources.
The NBC Nightly News picked up on the story tonight, reporting that possibly thousands of pets could be sick or dead. Here’s the video.
Also: The Oregon public health veterinarian ups his state’s death toll, and the Oregonian stays on the story. That official’s name is Dr. Emilio DeBess, and I think Dr. Patty Khuly should give him one of her awards. He’s one of the people who stepped up and told the truth, along with Dr. Paul Pion of the Veterinary Information Network, featured in that NBC News report. (Disclaimer: Dr. Pion’s one of my co-authors.)
If you have a pet with a recall-related illness, let us remind you to:
- Call the FDA to report your information
- Call your veterinarian and ask him or her to report to your state veterinarian, also for the FDA
- Enter your pet in our database

I’d like to see some jail time for some Menu Food Execs.
Patience has it’s limits.

And I would like to see some very severe penalties for brands that have willingly mislead the public about their food and it’s production.

Menu didn’t return calls to NBC. That about sums it up.

I’d like to know exactly how the FDA is collecting and analyzing the data. Do they even have personnel qualified to do this? The silence from them is deafening. I am reminded of FEMA.

60 Minutes need to do a story on menu Foods. They’ll get to the bottom of this.

your link to the oregon vet story doesn’t work. :(

The FDA told me an investigator would be sent to pick up the remaining food to test it. I kept some out in hopes of also finding an independent lab for testing. Our state FDA has been very helpful and polite. I still am waiting for the food to be picked up. They also are requesting our vet’s records.

My dachshund had to be put down Sun. after three days under vet care - My other dachshund spent two days at the vet’s on IV’s and is now home on a special diet and is to be checked again on and off during this and the following week - I didn’t learn until Fri. of last week that Nutro Ultro had been added to the list and immediately took my dog in - Not only am I heartbroken(because in my mind he was murdered), but thus far I’m also out $1500 in vet bills so far - My vet did report it to the state vet and gave the UPC info, etc. - To me this whole thing is akin to tainted baby food - I would really like justice as would any parent/owner of a child or animal!!!

Ah Steve, There is nothing I’d like to see better than these outright greedy criminals put away for many years and to lose their retirement and any monies whatsoever for life.

Menu Foods is as greedy as they come.
Menu’s manufacturing platform includes four state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities located in Emporia, Kansas, Pennsauken, New Jersey, North Sioux City, South Dakota and Streetsville, Ontario. These plants utilize high-speed equipment and leading-edge technologies to produce pet food in aluminum and steel cans in all currently used sizes at rates of up to 1,000 cans per minute. With the pouch expansion completed in 2005, Menu is able to produce 85g pouches at the rate of up to 1,110 pouches per minute. Collectively, these plants are capable of producing more than one billion containers annually. These facilities are designed for maximum flexibility, which, in turn, allows Menu to provide the full range of products customers’ demand.
Menu currently produces more than one billion containers per year.

In the months leading up to the Full Blown SARS issue being known, we found that the info we had wasn’t being acknowledged, almost a carbon copy of what is Going on here again but this time with PETS. We emailed the PMO Prime Minister’s Office so that Health Canada would do something & then we got an email from an individual who didn’t identify himself asking questions. We checked his identity & identified him as a Deputy Minister of a State/Province of Ontario. So we Called him & asked why was a Deputy Minister of a Provincial Government calling us about an issue that we had sent to our federal Government, he has NO Answer & no Follow Up was ever started. We then knew the only option was to send our finding to the WHO World Health Organization in Europe & cc’s their New York Office in case things got worse, which they did.
What we’re saying here is that we’re NOT surprised that you are having to Collect ALL the data Yourselves like we did & GOOD for You because the System sure isn’t Ready for HUGE problems like what is Going on with Menu Foods where we used to Buy Dents for Our Own Dogs…
Comment by retired rural Elected Councillor — March 28, 2007 @ 8:10 pm
Did these guys ever have a plan for a crisis?
Obviously these guys thought they were infallible and would never need it. Hiring a PR firm in the midst of a major disaster is not a Crisis Plan. Not the kind of company I want to put my trust in.

New York State HOA replied to my (why aren’t you making announcements? e-mail.) I also asked why they weren’t using the media to keep the public updated.
My reply: they are working hard. They are in touch with their (voluntarily) registered vets. They are picking up samples of petfood and testing them to assure all poisoned food is off the market.
The pet owner’s responsibility is to keep track of how much food and what kind of food and when it was ingested and report to the State F.D.A.
Whoever said they are unprepared for a crisis is absolutely correct.
Comment by Sally Callahan — March 28, 2007 @ 8:39 pm
I am just so thankful to see the news agencies finally reporting some facts about how serious this issue is. What in the heck is the FDA doing if they aren’t tallying the numbers of the cases reported to them. I live here in Georgia and have been calling the state FDA office since Monday following the recall and have yet to get through. I have left no less than seven messages for the person who I need to speak with but have never heard a single word back from her.
The day after the recall was issued, I got in touch with Menu and was told that someone would be back in touch with me. I never heard a word so finally got back through again Tuesday only to be given the same song and dance routine. I imagine many of you have had the same experiences.
I had to take my cat back into the vet’s office again on Monday. He had developed ulcers in his mouth which apparently is another of many side effects that he may experience. He is doing much better and hopefully will be able to come home again tomorrow. This is twice now that he has been hospitalized with acute renal failure, etc.
Anyway, I am thinking of all your beloved pets and say a prayer every night about all the pets everywhere that are suffering because of this atrocity.

Unfortunately it takes a hell of a lot longer to get out of a mess then it does to get into one Sally.
I sure hope they are testing EVERY BRAND thats connected with Menu. Especially those “Natural and Organic Brands” not on recall that turned out to be a Menu plant produced product.

Why It Took So Long to Find The Menu Foods Toxin
Why did it take more than 8 days for Cornell and The New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) to find the toxin? The Scientific American suggests that Cornell — one of the first labs in testing pet foods against accidents and terrorism* — was ill-prepared in testing pet foods since it had limited access of comparison toxins and NYSDAM had problems loading the wet food into the machines for testing.

Special Report: The Poisoning of Our Pets
Scientists and government agencies home in on the cause of more than 100 pet deaths from tainted food. By Nikhil Swaminathan.
Early this month, Jim Valentine found himself faced with a heart-wrenching decision: the 35-year-old, unemployed computer consultant from Lansing, Mich., had to decide whether to shell out thousands of dollars he didn?t have to try to save his beloved dying cat, Silvus. His nine-year-old, silver-furred friend was suffering from kidney failure and he likely needed a pricey kidney transplant. Instead, Silvus was put to death on March 3.
“My only option at that point was to be somewhat financially responsible and have him euthanized,” Valentine says sadly, “which was a terrible choice to have to make…. I haven’t cried like that since I was 13 years old.”
Nearly two weeks later, on March 16, Menu Foods, a Canadian-based pet food manufacturer, announced the recall of over 60 million cans and pouches of wet cat and dog food produced in facilities in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., between December 3, 2006 and March 6.

I had to put my cat down on Monday at 8:20. What I witnessed with my beloved pet the night before was devastating…this is the cruelist act against our four foot family members. I would like to see a web site started so we can post the pictures of our lost ones so we can share and grieve together and not feel alone in this pain.
Comment by Sharon — March 28, 2007 @ 9:38 pm
I still have a hard time writing about this. I lost my precious Scout on February 25. She was an 8 year old blue heeler mix. I started mixing Iams Active Maturity with her dry food in January. I switched wet food because I put her sister on Iams Weight control. Her breath got real bad around February 19. She went down real fast. I took her to the vet on Feb. 22. BUN was 370. Two days of IV fluids and it came down to 110. Six hours off fluids and it went back up. Vet told us to come get her and spend time with her. She started seizing in the night and was euthanized at 10am. This was before the recall and the vet was not too aggressive. I have noticed that weeks of fluids do bring some results, but we did not know. I reported on the petconnection site. I called Menu—no response. I called Iams—someone is supposed to call back. It’s been a week. I called the FDA and left messages. I live in rural Alabama. I bought my food in Birmingham. This story is not being reported here. I want my Scoutie to be counted.

I went to the Walmart neighborhood market that sold me the poisoned food that killed my cat and asked the same manager, for the 3rd time, what they were going to do for pet owners. He told me he would refund my money. When I reminded him my cat had died and I had $1000 in vet bills, he tried to give me Menu Foods number. Thanks for nothing. I told him I noticed there was still no signs advising pet owners of the recall, like I had asked him to do on March 17th… he said corporate didn’t tell him to do it. Menu foods and walmart… 2 corporate giants doing nothing for their
(ex)customers.

Word from a reliable soure. Menu Foods plants in Pennsauken, New Jersey and Emporia, Kansas are shut down this week and Monday they both re-open to produce petfood again…… Has anyone personally had their phone calls returned from Menu? My pre-recorded message said someone would contact me in 72 hrs - still hasn’t happened. I go see my attorney tomorrow…..

I wrote to Shepherd Smith on Fox News about this. I think that as many people should write to him, or other reporters as can, and ask them not to allow this to die. We really need to get some answers.

Also I wrote to a couple of Internet groups tonight to ask them to remind people that recieve their daily e-mails of the pet food recall. Maybe if anyone that can could remind others in this way, the recall information will get out to others to either remind them, or perhaps get to someone who doesn’t know about it. We don’t appear to be getting much help otherwise, except of course this site, and a few others.

We need a Congressional Hearing.
Comment by Steve — March 28, 2007 @ 10:33 pm
Steve, I pray each day that will happen. There are no words that can describe this nightmare, I want to wake up out of the fog and I can’t - I still want to know WHY it took a freaking month to pull the products?? While many pet parents were scratching their heads wondering what the hell is going on - me included and then have to go through an emotional roller coaster - worst ride I’ve ever been on? And, why can’t we have a conclusion on this and WHY are those plants still running??? IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!! As you can tell, I am still searching and searching for answers and this time last week I was at the VET ER watching my Raz die and looking at one lying on the floor trying to recover and how guilty I feel

I happened upon the recall notice on Yahoo’s web page within an hour of it being publicized. I immediately tried to call the number they gave for Menu Foods and it just rang busy. Trying to get to the website was an utter failure for 2 days. When I finally did get to it, it would just spin never download. Eventually the site was updated and had the recall items listed. Monday following the recall, I finally got through to Menu Foods customer call center and talked to someone there. Once she found out that my boy, Cocoajoe had been put down February 16 before we knew any on this horrendous night mare, she said we would have to end the interview and she took my name/phone number/ and address and said someone would get right back to me, and she was very sorry for our problems and “they, needed to make it right.” I hung up thinking they would call right back..HA. Friday they finally returned our call, and gave us a claim number and a web site to go to. We had to print off the nine page questionnaire and mail it back to them. I know my boys was old (17 1/2), but up to just a few days before we put him down he still acted like a kitten. Nothing anyone can ever do will bring him back, and in my heart I knew that the food he ate, was the culprit. I just can’t actually prove it. Who keeps used cat pouches….thank god our other 3 cats were on dry food. Cocoa had hardly any teeth left and wet food was his food source. Not a day or moment goes by that I don’t miss him terribly as he was my boy, my life. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost their best friends.

I spoke with my FDA Rep listed for KY and she was very nice. I left a message and it took two days for her to get back to me, but once she did we talked for a long time. She stated that she agrees that the numbers that the media are reporting are from Menu Foods and not from the FDA. She told me that her region alone has received thousands of calls. She said that the FDA was working very hard to get “real” numbers to report; however, proof to verify these numbers may take time….I also spoke to my vet and she stated that she had seen an unusually high number of kidney failures in cats for the last 3 months…she said this was only the tip of the iceberg considering long term affects on the animals that were infected by the poison. I suggest that if your animal(s) did eat the poison food and have blood tested ok, to continue blood tests to check the function of their organs and check white blood cell count on a yearly basis.
Comment by Lindsay A. Glass — March 29, 2007 @ 7:52 am
Oregon (the single state that seems to be tracking this issue and the deaths) is now reporting 28 deaths. Oregon is 1% of the US population. Thus, extrapolating from the Oregon data would mean 2,800 deaths across the country. And, that number will be going up. I still expect the number to exceed 5,000 and possibly tens of thousands of dead animals across the country.

Steve, that really does frighten me. How many people are still feeding their pets this poison? I am so angry at the pet food industry I could spit. We trusted these companies to provide food that, at the very least, wouldn’t HARM our pets. We paid MONEY for this. And all we get is the silent wall? Unbelieveable.

Sharon, I’m in the same boat as you - my first cat last Thursday and now I’m on the 2nd cat. I, too called Menu on 03-17 as soon as I got a phone call advising me on the recall and still to this date 03-29 not one flippin return call and I have called 4 times. Seems like Menu is hiding - there has got to be something done and I hope it just doesn’t go away - it’s just not right!!!!!

My dog has been eating Nutro Natural Choice, I called Menu Foods the first night sat 3/17 when I heard about the recall I got though on the second call. On Tuesday 3/20 my dog had a blood test and had to stay at the vet to have her kidneys flushed I called menu foods again to make note of this. I also called the L.A. County Health dept. they called me back got my information and the next day a vet from L.A. County called me back to get all my dogs information they also contacted her vet. I also left a message with the FDA, they also called me back this week to get all the information they could about my dog I was on the phone with them for 30 minutes. Menu foods are the only ones who have not got back to me.

My pug Rupert experienced renal failute this month from Nutro Ultra, but seems to be recovering. Nutro Foods has responded to my emails, I do have a case number. I have not sent anything in yet because Rupert has a follow up appointment tomorrow with the medical specialists. I have given my information to a Menu Foods representative twice, still no answer. I tried to call the FDA numerous times, finally got to leave a voice mail…still no response. The emails you send to the FDA just send back a standard response. It’s interesting the dichotomy of who gets a response and who doesn’t. However, hardly anyone gets a response from Menu Foods, go figure.
Comment by Joyce — March 29, 2007 @ 9:41 am
I started feeding my 2 dogs Nutro and Iams pouches on March 1, because the store was out of their regular brand. Within 2 days they started drinking 4x the amount of water they normally drank. They both started vomitting. After 1 day of the food, neither dog would eat anymore of it- I discussed this odd behavior with a friend. We thought maybe the food had a high salt content, which might explain the excess drinking. My friend called me on March 16th, about the recall. I took my dogs to the vet on the following Monday for blood and urine tests. Luckily both had normal results. I am glad my dogs had better sense than I when they both refused to eat more of the food.

Menu Foods needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility for this outrage. Thousands of people have lost their pet or their pets are in the hospital. We had to put our beloved kitten Kelsey to sleep last month for kidney failure and he was only 5 months old. When we adopted him he was perfectly healthy. 3 months later he was all of a sudden lethargic, not eating and drinking in excess. In my families mind Menu Foods have killed our beautiful kitten. If you have any food left make sure to keep it and send it to Eukanuba to be tested. I have and they are at least paying our vet bill. I have never been so saddened by something so outrageous.
Comment by Sue Newcomb — March 29, 2007 @ 11:48 am
I have called Menu Foods at least 5 times and not gotten anywhere. If you have it call either Iams or Eukanuba’s phone number. They seem to be a lot more helpful and considerate for peoples feelings. The FDA does not seem to be that helpful either.
Comment by Sue Newcomb — March 29, 2007 @ 11:56 am
My cat died early in Jan from acute kidney failure. The vet insisted he had to have ingested something toxic although nothing in my house had changed and he stayed inside. He had all the symtems we now hear about and could not be saved. He had eaten Iams packets of meat & gravy. Does anyone know if any bad food could have been on the shelf as early as January?
Comment by Donna — March 29, 2007 @ 2:29 pm
Jamie, I know how you feel. We had to put our cat of 15 years down on Feb. 16 as well. We had no idea that he was poisoned by the cat food he was eating. Our vet, because of his age is not making this into a big deal, but he was a healthy cat up until about 2 weeks before he was put down. He had canker sores, that he would go and get shots for about every three months, but except for that he was extremely healthy, but this time it was different. He went downhill fast. He ate some special Kitty in pouches, due to the canker sores. He began drooling, with extremely bad breath, he wouldn’t eat much, he drank tons of water, and couldn’t control his bladder. He became so weak and could barely walk, and this was inside of a week. He had to be put down due to kidney failure. We weren’t sure how he could go from a healthy cat with canker sores to kidney failure but we sure didn’t think it was poison. When the recall came, we checked the pouches and they matched exactly, date and UPC codes. We contacted the vet who didn’t appear to know about the recall until we told him. His assistant when I called her told me that it was possible that 9 cats could have died from around the US while eating the same food, and acted like it wasn’t a big deal until they found the toxin it could be a fluke she said. My sister called both FDA and Menu foods last week, but still hasn’t heard from them. I called our vet and asked that he report to the state vet, but I have a feeling that it probably won’t happen, I told her that poison was found in the food, and she just acted again, like it was no big deal.
You know, if they are suspicious of the numbers on this site, the vets or FDA or someone needs to be putting up a website of their own where our pets can be counted, so far this has been the only place where our cat has counted. I miss him so much still, there are days I still cry. If he had died from natural causes, or even an accident, I think I could put this behind me a little easier, but poison in the pet food is inexusable, and the media, the government, some vets and the company doesn’t seem to care! Wal-mart doesn’t even appear to care, and seem calloused and clueless. In fact so many people appear clueless that it is suspicious. I do think that reporters and government should be taking this much more seriously than they are. I wrote to Shepherd Smith, a couple of ap people and I e-mailed a lot of acquaintances, friends and family personally about this. I’ll continue to e-mail or call whoever it takes to get listened to.

My little Anna started vomiting, drinking lots of water, wetting all over the house, had bad breath and got a rash and sores on her head and around the eyes. I took her to vet in Jan. and he ask if I had changed her food. He said it was a reaction to something. Gave her prednosone. She continued to Vomit lots even in bed at night several times a night. In Feb. I took her back to vet and he said her throat was sore and swollen and gave her antibiotics. In 3 weeks she was throwing up even more and back to vet I went. And another round of antibiotics was given. I went out of town to my daughters on the 16th, and forgot her food so gave her food my daughter had for her dog. On Monday I went to store not knowing Annas food was recalled and bought her another box of 12 pouches. It had not been taken off the shelf which upsets me. On that Friday the 23rd, I was back home and found out about the recall and all pouches had the recall dates and numbers on them, even ones I had forgot at home. Anna’s vomiting has almost stopped since I stopped giving her the food.I took her for blood test and was so blessed, her kidneys and liver is ok, which the antibiotics May have saved her life. But she has developed a heart murmur. I have had Anna for 4 years and she is like my child as your pets are to you. So what they have did in harming our pets is no different than harming a child. I feel something needs to be done to the ones responsible for this. Now I don’t know what to feed her.
