FDA announces recall on pig ear treats

March 26, 2007

Although it seems like we are now the “pet-recall channel,” we are in fact a blog of all sorts of pet-related news and information. In fact, I know that Gina has at least three of her DogCar reviews to post this week — Subaru Tribeca, GMA Sierra and Mitsubishi Outback and maybe one more, I forgot what she said — to catch up on her test drives.

We’re going to be trying to get in more news from the rest of the pet-world this week, so here’s the first.

A recall has also been announced for pigs’ ears sold as treats for dogs. From the FDA:

Petrapport, Inc. is voluntarily recalling pig ear dog treats it imported from a Chilean company during the period August 2006 through December 2006 because the pig ears have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in dogs, and, if there is cross contamination, young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

  1. How often does stuff like this happen? It it hadn’t been for the death of my 4 month old Zipper (from the food), I wouldn’t have any idea! I really don’t live under a rock! Why isn’t this stuff more mainstream? I don’t even own a computer…if it weren’t for my neice and the HOURS I have spent at her home looking and reading, I still would only know what the TV tells me!

  2. We need to be more informed about pet nutrition and educate ourselves. The web can be a great tool with anything right at our fingertips. I have started reading the ingredients of anything that I purchase for my pets. They will eat nothing that contains glutens of any kind, by products of any kind, corn meal, soybean meal, BHA, BHT or any other junk to make pet food. The good foods cost a lot more money but I rather spend it on my pets than at the vets.
