Pet-food recall: Shelters take a hit

March 21, 2007

Summer the Golden and friendsShelters, rescue groups, and humane societies, which often rely heavily on donated food to feed the animals in their care, have been hit hard by the pet food recall. The Colorado Humane Society, for instance, had to throw away 98 percent of its wet cat and dog food.

The folks at Aspen Pet Products let us know that they’d “answered the Colorado Humane Society’s call for help by donating hundreds of cans of cat and dog food to animals in need at the shelter. In addition to the company’s commitment to the well-being of all animals and the desire to help, Aspen Pet Products hopes it will encourage other companies to donate and become involved.”

We encourage everyone to check with your local shelter, humane society, and animal rescue group and see if they’re experiencing food shortages related to the recall. If they are, consider donating money or food not on the recall list.

  1. I’ve passed on the suggestion of food or monetary donations to a group I moderate.

I also just called a close friend with a guide dog and a cat. I offered help reading labels to her. Senior citizens or anyone with helper dogs could probably use similar assistance.

Is there a blog started yet for how we can reach out? I’d like to get other suggestions.

  2. Many areas of the country have a local Freecycle Group, http://www.freecycle.org which circulates unused/unneeded items to others in your community, including pet foods.

If you belong to this organization, please write to the moderators of the group, urging them to place a notice to all the members about the pet food recall.

I did just this after I heard about the recall and my cat became ill. The moderators posted a notice to all members of my local group.

If pet connections has a Public Service Announcement to offer please contact our radio station.

    Thank you,

  3. What kibble (dry food) company actually manufacturers their own food?

No more outsourcing or mystery suppliers.

US Company, US owned manufacturing plant of that company, US products only.

We are looking to upgrade from Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice Dry.

We do not want a product made of beef, wheat, or corn.

    Any suggestions?

We will no longer be feeding canned food to our dogs but will feed human grade chicken and a mixture of vegetables - non-corn.
