Pet-food recall: Wednesday night numbers

March 21, 2007

As of 5 p.m. PT, with 1120 reports into the PetConnection.com recall database:

  • Cats, deceased: 313
  • Dogs, deceased: 189

More than 500 dead pets. Same caveats as before: This is self-reported information. But any way you look at it, even if half the reports don’t meet the standards of an “official” count because the pets died before the recall, people weren’t sure exactly what food they bought, etc., it’s pretty darn clear that those “official” numbers from the FDA will be heading much higher than they are now.

Now, we have additionally gotten dozens of people e-mailing us their information, or posting it as comments on the blog here. This does us no good when it comes to counting the numbers. We just can’t enter you into the database, so your pet isn’t being counted.

We want your pet to count. So if you haven’t entered your pet, please click here put the information into our database … it’ll only take a couple of minutes.

Also, we decided we needed to provide some more help. That’s why we’ve put up an article on resources for dealing with the loss of a pet, including phone numbers to pet-loss hot lines.

We have a lot of people asking us to recommend food, diagnose a sick pet (”we’re not sure but maybe she ate some …”) and otherwise provide advice we cannot. That’s why we’re encouraging you all to check in with your veterinarian. That’s especially true is your pet has eaten a recalled product, even if he shows no symptoms he may be on the verge of life-threatening illness. Catch it now.

As for foods, even before this there was no one perfect food for every pet. So call your veterinarian and discuss what’s best. We’ll offer more thoughts in food choices in the days to come, but for right now let me emphasize: Your veterinarian is the place to start with your pet-health questions.

Finally, to find all our resources — links to the database, articles on kidney failure and pet-loss, and more, please head back to our home page. You’ll find all the links there.

“The Animal Medical Center on the East Side of Manhattan has tested 143 animals for renal failure since Saturday. Of those, 10 were confirmed to be diet-related cases, and one cat died.

Denise Tracy of Milford, Mass., said her first thought after hearing about the recall was, “Oh my gosh, I killed my cat.” Fluffy’s health deteriorated after Tracy fed her Special Kitty brand food, one of the recalled labels, and she had to euthanize the 11-year-old cat last week.
She said the family, including her five children, are heartbroken. Her husband contacted a lawyer, and she plans to contact her state’s attorney general.

  4. We are very undone about our cat Harry Potter. We are trying the IV and tomorrow we will see what happens. Harry has eaten about one tablespoon of food in 6 days. He cries all the time and we are crying also. I want to sue these people and I want to be compensated for all our pain..

  5. Hello,
An update for you. I have 3 cats and all of them have been eating the recall food (Iams) confirmed by the numbers. The two girls have been ill on and off since around February 29th. On March 2nd I took one cat (Lucy) in to the vet and all her lab values came back normal. She got better and not knowing any better I kept feeding her the food. The other girl cat(Happy) was on and off with the vomiting, lethargy, and not eating during this time too but since the first cat’s bloodwork came back ok I figured they had a little virus or something and we could wait it out. The minute I heard about the food recall I checked the lot numbers and sure enough they matched. Now the cats were acting better, eating, and not vomiting anymore but I knew better than to wait in a situation like this. I took the second cat (Happy) in to be tested and her creatinine was 2.8 - higher than normal but not terrible. Then I took the first cat(Lucy) back again to repeat the bloodwork as a precaution and guess what. On March 2nd her BUN was 25 and her creatinine was 2.1 (both normal) and today March 21st, her BUN is 59 and her creatinine is 6.5. The vet wanted Happy back immediately to be retested and her creatinine is stable at 2.8. Both cats are hospitalized on IV fluids as we speak and the vet said it is pretty clear that this was from the food. I will let you know how this turns out - they will be there until Friday. My message is this - both of these cats were eating and acting ok except for a few very subtle changes in their behavior and Lucy was acting actually better than Happy. If your pets have eaten this recalled food take them to the vet and have them tested even if they are not acting sick yet as they may just not be showing signs yet and you may catch it early enough. I still do not know what the outcome of this will be even though I have been proactive. The boy cat was tested today and is fine so far but he will be retested also and watched like a hawk by me. He has had no symptoms at all so far. For now, I wait, I pray, and I hope I caught this in time. For all of you who have lost your pets, my heart goes out to you. Are they kidding me that they still have not identified the pathogen? I am having trouble swallowing that one. I wish the best for those of you home worrying like I am and for those of you who have lost your companions you have my deepest sympathy.

  6. Please ask your vet about Renal Essentials, a vitamin supplement for kidney support. Maybe print out the webpage to show the ingredients:

    http://www.vetriscience.com/re.....s-cats.php

(They also sell a version for dogs.)

I’ve had to take my cats off wheat gluten due to other issues, about a year ago. Probably saved their lives since one kitty has bowel problems when fed any wheat glutten.

She’s also the kitty who ate a bag of green tea & had high BUN/creatinine levels, which lead me to research Renal Essentials & have her try that. Her BUN/creatinine levels are down & her vet supports keeping her on the supplement.

Prayers going out to all your sweet fuzzballs…

  7. Thank you for your work collecting this important data.

My heart goes out to all the cats, dogs, and their humans who have been so gravely affected by the tainted food. My heart also goes out to the nameless and unloved dogs and cats that suffered and died alone in cages in the Menu Foods lab tests on these products. I hope their lives are also acknowledged and counted. To Menu Foods: there are better ways to test products, especially when it is already known that potential toxins exist.

  8. My 12 year old cat meow was given the recalled Iams flakes with Salmon in sauce and Flakes with Tuna and ocean whitefish in sauce as a treat every day. She stopped eating and drinking on February 28th. We got her to the vet the next morning. They did a blood panel and put her on Sub Q fluids. Her BUN was over 200 and her creatinine was 18. We had to euthanize her later that day. This is too much of a coincidence to me… She had no kidney problems prior. After I heard about the recall I checked the codes on the cans of food we had left. It makes me feel so bad. I was feeding her this food that I thought was premium and it was killing her… I still hear her meow. It is so strange. My kids and I miss her every day. She was such a good friend.

  9. I’m so angry at this situation! Why is MenuFood protecting the wheat gluten supplier by not naming what company it is???

I feel that the world needs to know who this company is! How can the FDA find answers if this companies name remains a secret!!??

  10. I brought my beloved Red home and am administering the sub q fluids and watching him with worry and hope. 5 days of agony and a $3000 vet bill. Every time I look at him I think about how he has gone from a frisky, hearty, happy cat - to a kitty whose future is uncertain and who looks so worn down. I am terrified to feed him anything I don’t cook myself. I feel so sad for all these people who have lost members of their family. I hope that Nutro and the other companies step up to the plate and take responsibility for what they have done.

  11. My cat went off his food middle of January shortly after I had switched him to canned food. He became istless, drinking a lot of water. Took him to Humane Society Vet 3rd of February, couldn’t afford full laboratory evaluation of over $100.00,but had concerns about so much water intake and not wanting to eat his dry food. I had them run a mini battery of lab tests to rule out diabetes or a tooth problem. I Was told only cat not well, maybe a virus and put on antibiotic amoxi/clav for possible “cold”. Vet checked his mouth thoroughly for tooth abscess since he didn’t seem to want to eat his dry food anymore and she found nothing. I had started feeding him canned wet food (from Walmart and Kroger) including Walmart brand to encourage him to eat… then I added the pouches (mixed grill)…. but he got even worse. Lost 2 pounds. Took him back for 2nd round of antibiotics on the 2nd of March… Vet re-examined his mouth since he had been drooling constantly for over a week and was still drinking a LOT of water…. and still losing weight. This time she found his tongue split towards the rear on the side and a large tumor/growth/abscess yellowish in color, which she HAD NOT seen 3 weeks earlier????? Nothing left to do for him at that point, so I had to put him to sleep so he wouldn’t suffer anymore….Now he’s been cremated and I wonder???? Cannot believe it was a cancer that grew in three weeks. Suspect something in the canned food or the pouches caused a major abscess that split the tongue is more likely the culprit in addition to the food causing him to drink so much water. All told it took about a month for this to take its toll on him. I really do wonder if it Was it the food?? He never got the full doses of the food, as I was supplementing with “people food”, so he was getting about 1/2 the “recommended” feeding amount, which is probably why he lasted a month instead of only a couple of weeks. So I wonder Who I contact to add him to the list of lost pets? Up until I started feeding him the canned food in the middle of January he had been perfectly fine. I should have never switched him to the pouches, but I thought I was giving him a “treat”. BIG MISTAKE! Recall hit the wires a little too late to save my Charlie Brown, and it was a lousy way for him to go…long and drawn out because I had no idea all the special food I was giving him was just making him worse and I feel really, really bad about that.

  12. One more thing, I went to Target this past Saturday March 18 2007 and told the manager of the store that I purchased the recalled cat food there and my cat had died of renal failure March 1. She looked at me like she did’nt know what I was talking about. They had heard nothing about the recall and the food was still on the shelves!! I checked back today and it had been removed, but how many more people bought that food?? This is very terrible.

  15. My cat Que became very sick from the pet food Special Kitty purchased from Walmart. He began throwing up on 2/22 and I took him to the vet on 2/24. We did not know about the pet food problem going in so when I took him in, the vet was horrified that he had 106 degree fever. The vet had never seen a temperature in a cat that high before, he was becoming jaunticed and his organs were starting to fail. The vet put him on IV fluids, did extensive blood work and we tried numerous antibiotics. He began to improve when the vet put him on Doxcycline and Baytril. He is home and still very thin but getting stronger by the day. Thank You to the heavens and a wonderful vet who believes in the strength of animals! I am so sorry for everyone who has suffered a loss or has a pet that is suffering. Please believe in your pets strength to survive..

  20. Some thoughts RE: the post questioning why Menu is protecting the gluten supplier by not sharing their name with the general public..

IMO, it’s probably best at this point in time that they refrain from doing so. The FDA is aware of the who the supplier is, and is conducting an investigation. At this point the wheat gluten link is purely speculative. The contaminant may indeed have originated from the gluten, but as of yet, there is no hard evidence to support this claim.

Publically divulging the supplier at this point could potentially do more harm than good. If they’re a major supplier- particularly if they also produce gluten for human foodstuffs- chances are, there would be widespread (and potentially unnecessary) panic. Serious damage could be done to the reputation of not only the supplier, but other companies that use them- when, in reality, it is still possible that they may have absolutely nothing to do with this. Fault has not been established thus far. We don’t know why this food is making people sick.

I’m not familiar with the legalities of such things, but I would imagine that there could be serious legal ramifications were Menu or the FDA to implicate the gluten supplier at this point- particularly if, in the end, the gluten is either proven NOT to have been the source of contamination, or cannot be conclusively proven to have been the source.

  21. I almost didn’t read this info because my cat is on dry food. While it may be just a coincidence; my cat has been vomiting on occaision for about a month. Otherwise he seems well; no weight loss, good energy. I will be calling my Vet today. My condolences to all who have suffered such a terrible loss and I thank you for taking the time to help keep the rest of us informed. Phyllis

  22. My puppy also became very ill… After she began vomiting almost every hour I rushed her into the Emergency Vets office - where she spent 2 days followed by 5 days at her Vets office. At one point she almost completely ceased urinating for 3 days. Whats so upsetting is right before this she was a completely healthy 1 year old dog. Full of life and it hit so strong and quickly. After $1,100 and 5 days of IV treatment she is back and getting stronger each day. Its amazing to me that word took so long to come out about this recall and now they are saying they can’t find anything in the food. Look at all these people there OBVIOUSLY is a problem and someone needs to take responsibility for that. I was heartbroken when my dog got ill but I was lucky she seems to be getting better each day my thoughts are now with all those people who have so sadly lost a pet to this terrible situation.

    Comment by TJ — March 22, 2007 @ 4:50 am

  23. I have read previous statements that the wheat gluten supplier “only provides supplies to pet food manufacturers.” My question when I read that was what other manufacturers are they referring to?

An AP article (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070321/D8O0R89G0.html) mentions: “The FDA has sent inspectors to Menu Food plants in New Jersey and Kansas. Most complaints stem from products made at the latter factory, though both received shipments of wheat gluten, identified as a possible source of contamination, from the same supplier, said Stephen F. Sundlof, the FDA’s chief veterinarian.”
How do we find out what products are manufactured at the New Jersey factory? I’m sure that Menu Foods doesn’t want us to know (and then boycott those products), but my “abundance of caution” tells me that I should avoid food from both plants… if I can find out what it is!

  25. CBC News, this morning, reported that Menu Foods is taking no responsibility for the deaths. They claim that the animal may have went outside and eaten garbage.
Doesn’t surprise me in the least.
    - Company finds out their food is killing pets.
    - Keeps selling the product long to make sure all the tainted food is sold off and used up.
    - Knows that any evidence will have already been discarded. (Left over cans would not be “proof”)
    - Claim that they can’t find the source of the problem.
    - What better way to minimize the lawsuits.

  26. My dog Malachi was diagnoised with Clostrdium perfringens on 13 MArch 2007. My vet said it was the worse infection she has ever seen. I just googled the bacterica and found out the source of the food poisoning is eating Meat/meat by products and gravy. Does any microbiologst out there know if wheat gluten can be contaminated with Type C C. perfringens?

Malachi was put down 20 March 2007. He was a five year old Standard Poodle who was given a clean bill of health during his routine physical on 26 January 2007. He had been scheduled for teeth cleaning on 20 March but was put down instead.

    Comment by Kendra Spadoni — March 22, 2007 @ 7:49 am

  27. Taking no responsibility? I don’t think so. Just a cop out because they don’t want to confront their mistake. The company didn’t check out their “new supplier” properly BEFORE they switched. Seems to be a Quality Control problem to me. I have written here before, and will continue to watch, do research and wait. One question I have is: though it is terrible to lose a loved one, what about all those animals that will live (for however long they can) and be on special prescription food or medications for the rest of their lives? Mewnu Foods should be held accountable for this too.
Not a day has passed since I put my Zippy down (2/21/07) that I haven’t cried for his pain. My Oscar is still in pain daily. Though he seems to be better, only time will tell. My thoughts go out to you all.

  29. It’s so frustrating. By a miracle I got through to the Menu Foods hotline but they won’t take my information because I don’t have the lot number.
My cat has been eating Nutro Max and Nutro Natural Choice pouches for three weeks while I was away on vacation at the end of Feb and before than, too. My husband dutifully was feeding her the food that I bought right before I left for vacation. When I got back two weeks ago I could not recognize my cat, she looked so old and sick. But my first thought was that she missed me and that’s why she looked unhealthy, especially because after few days she started looking a little better. Although her behavior was a little strange, she wanted to drink water almost all the time, was sluggish and didn’t eat much. Finally I took her to the vet and found out that her kidneys are failing. She is in treatment right now. I have no proof of the food that I fed her but a receipt from Petco and a print out from my P.A.L.S card. And just because I don’t save empty pouches “just in case”, the company won’t accept my cat as being sick from eating their food. This is so frustrating. This way they can weasel out of so many claims and lower the numbers of actual damage they have done. I hope someone will look into it. My heart goes out to all that lost their pets already. My kitty is still fighting but the vet still doesn’t know what will happen. She is my baby and her unconditional love for the past 12 years helped me get through many difficult times.

  30. last week we had to bury our cat Snowball, a loving 13 pound all white cat with one blue eye and one green eye. we had adopted her from the SPCA almost 4 years ago. although money is tight every problem that she had we never thought twice about running her to the vet. three years ago she developed diabetes and her insulin, blood tests, etc. was a stretch money wise. we were wondering why our cat who ALWAYS wanted food was being real strange when we tried to feed her. last week i called to her and said it “was meow time” her call for food. she never came to the kitchen. because she was so big she had a staircase to get on our bed. i guess she had tried to get up and passed out. i called to her and noticed she was having problems breathing (her stomach got huge when she breathed in) and she cried during her exhale. i saw that she had uncontrolable swollowing. if i pet her she still purred so i went and got her food. i put it under her nose and she never acknowledged it was there. at that point i called the vet and told him about the problem and he said to get her right in. i called my husband at work and told him to come home right away because i couldn’t handle taking her in. when my husband got home he picked her up and she had peed and lost her bowels on the floor. once at the vet Snowball was given fluids and when her sugar was checked it had bottomed out (because she had slowed down eating and we still gave her her insulin). the vet gave her a tube of glucose and she started to come around. about 2 hours later she went into uncontrolable seizures and by her eyes they could tell she now had brain damage. when we called the vet he said that she was dying and in fact if it had been just a hour later when i found her she would of been dead then. when she passed we went and picked her up and buried her in the backyard and we are having a stone made for her with her name.

IT WAS THE NEXT DAY THAT IT HIT THE NEWS ABOUT THE WET CAT FOOD! THE FOOD WE HAD BEEN FEEDING HER FOR AT LEAST THE PAST YEAR. I HOPE THAT SOMEONE CAN START A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. IT IS NOT JUST THE VET BILLS, SHE WAS ONE OF MY CHILDREN……AND NOW SHE IS DEAD! I PRAY THAT THE VETS CAN SAVE ANY MORE ANIMALS THAT HAVE BEEN HURT BY THIS DISASTER….NEESA

I was very impressed with the response.

  33. I too have contacted FDA. These people are trying hard to get to the bottom of this. We lost our cat about 4 days before the recall. The FDA is coming here Monday to get our unopeded food pouched that I saved, they want to do testing on them. The vet that I take my cat to, has already seen 3 cases of pets having to be put to sleep because of this. Now the media says it was rat poison, can menufoods get any more irresponsible?

  34. My 15 year old lab died last month. Why? The vet claims fluid in the chest. But he stopped eating and drinking water. Didn’t move. He was eating Nutro dry dog food. The vet claims it came on “suddenly.” No warning. We then gave him gravy dog food to get him to eat. So we’re unsure why he died. In fact, no one will know until we hear more, or as I say, the real facts will come out. I will bet every dollar I have that there is MORE contamination with this recall. Why did it take three months to hear about this poisoning by CHINA? The food was contaminated since Dec. 2006. My family now has a new lab. We paid $850 and are training her again. Keep in mind, families with pets, especially dogs, give them training. This is costly. A good dog, requires special care, food and training. Imagine if our dear lab was a service dog? What would the cost be to replace him then? These dogs cost $50K up to replace. It is not like going to the pound and getting a replacement.

I am so upset. Now I hear on my local news (not national) as well as international (Canadian) that it “might” be in the human food supply? They can’t rule this out? Let’s see. Where is our Homeland Security dept? Where is our Dept. of Agriculture?

I read last week that one of the US processing plants for dog food which was part of this recall was located in Kansas. Apparently, this same plant was fined years ago for contaminated cow food, and the FDA or dept of agriculture had to intervene and warn them not to mix certain feed in their product for cattle.

    Mad cow?

There is definitely more to come from this CHINA poisoning.

I don’t believe anything they tell me.

My otherwise healthy lab is gone and I’m now left wondering who is watching out for Americans!

  35. What are we doing about this situation? I feel like I have been feeding better quality food than what Menu Foods shovels out ————— However I opened a can of wet food which I have been feeding now for about 6 months - label does not include wheat gluten —- however — I mix water to make a gravy ———— AND FOUND A PIECE OF PLASTIC AND LIKE A SMALL BLACK SEED IN THIS CAN OF FOOD —— WHERE DO I GO AND WHERE DO I REPORT THIS —- AND I’M NOT LETTING IT OR THE CAN OUT OF MY SITE AS IF IT IS ANYTHING I’LL SET ON SOMEBODY’S ASS —— I MAY HAVE SOME PROOF ——- HOW DO I CONTACT WHO I NEED TO CONTACT? also I e-mailed the company and I have not gotten a response ! ! ! ! !

  36. My best friend Bro a female Shih Tzu died on 1/5/07 after weeks of fruitless attempts to determine what was wrong with her. She was 13, so the vet said it was old age. I only fed her Nutro Max Puppy food, and yes I killed her with poisoned food. I have filed suit against Menu Foods; it is class action so anyone who wants to join in pls do so. It will take years to be resolved; I miss my dog, still have my cat Jet.
