Vegas goes to the dogs

February 2, 2007

Ch. Hobergays Fineus FoggBetting on dogs is nothing new, but betting on show dogs sure is, in the U.S. at least. But if you have a knack for picking the top dog at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, your time has come. Well, sort of, since the Vegas play isn’t for money:

For the first time in the 131-year history of the Westminster Dog Show, odds have been made on the outcome and posted on the sports book in Las Vegas, allowing dog lovers to have some fun determining which breed will win the coveted Best in Show title Feb. 13.

No money will change hands and it’s purely for entertainment,” says John Avello, director of race and sports book operations at the Wynn Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“But people are going to have a lot of fun with it, because it is without doubt America’s premier dog sporting event and has a huge following.”

Too bad it’s not for money, since I’ve picked something like five of the last seven Best in Show winners. My early prediction this year: The Dandie Dinmont, Ch. Hobergays Fineus Fogg, who is one of the last of a dying breed, according to a piece by the Terrierman.

In any case, if you want to get your money down, here’s the scoop. Also: Check out the grooming secrets of the top dogs. What a riot!

I’m not feeling quite so strong about it now, considering that the Dandie Dinmont seems to be the consensus pick, and the subject of a feature in Sports Illustrated. (Along with his famous co-owner, Bill Cosby.) Oh, what the heck. I said it here first. I’ll stick with it. Go, you silly looking, sway-backed, puffy-headed dog! Go! I can safely predict Harry the Dandie will win his breed and advance to groups tonight. That’s because he’s the only Dandie Dinmont terrier at Westminster this year. […]
