What is the deal with smaller and smaller dogs?

December 14, 2006

Small Dogs, Big HeartsBrandy the Chihuahua weighs less than two pounds, making her the smallest dog in the world. Forget my post on purse rats: Eventually the folks who are breeding for ever-smaller dogs will get them rat-sized.

Want a small wonder? Let me point you again to what Dr. Patty says. And let me tell you, too, how many times I’ve been at our veterinarian’s and have seen one of these little dogs come in with a broken leg. The dog jumped off the furniture, was dropped by a kid or rolled over on in bed.

I love little dogs. I just like them a little bigger, and worry about the health and fragility of these tiny, tiny ones.

By the way, if you’re seriously thinking of getting a little dog, I like to recommend Darlene Arden’s “Small Dogs, Big Hearts.” Darlene is a friend of mine, I must say in interests of full disclosure, but a more knowledgeable expert and better advocate for little dogs and those who love them you will never fine.
