Where are the greyhounds?

October 24, 2006

Interesting — no, make that tragic — what’s not said in this piece:

A greyhound dog trainer and breeder is being fined $1,000 after Arizona dog racing officials say more than 150 retired greyhounds he took charge of simply disappeared.

Authorities say over the past year, [Richard] Fauvreau contracted with the Tucson, Arizona Greyhound Park to ship retired dogs to Colorado and place them with adoption agencies. He was paid $150 per dog.

Let’s see … 142 greyhounds (the expanded version says eight are accounted for) times $150 equals $21,300. Figuring the cost of "disappearing" the dogs is pretty cheap, that’s a pretty nice profit, even with a $1,000 fine. I would hope that if what I’m guessing happened has actually happened, fraud and animal-cruelty charges will follow the investigation — along with real fines and jail time.

On the much brighter side, loved this story of a dog gone overboard in Florida — and saved by people out fishing.

  1. I’d worry they were sold as lab animals than put down. More profit that way.
