Safer dogs and 2 a.m. Web posts

YardI don’t know how Dr. Marty stays so calm. My esteemed co-author was to be on "Good Morning America" Tuesday morning to talk about our new books, and I was the one who was a nervous wreck. Couldn’t sleep, and yes, I even resorted in desperation to an Ambien despite the bizarre sleep-eating episode.

Finally, at 2 a.m., I decided to do something that I thought was helpful: Add content to the Web site. Why not? After all, there’d surely be some people coming that way because of Dr. Marty’s GMA appearance.

So I put the new column in, and updated the home page. Unfortunately, I broke both in so doing. I broke the link to the special offer, which I found out when the publisher called me at 5:30 a.m (I finally fell asleep around 4 a.m.) to say that "Good Morning America" wouldn’t put our home page on their Web site unless it was fixed ASAP. Needless to say, nothing has ever been fixed more quickly. That call was more galvanizing that a triple-shot espresso.

A couple days later, I get a call from my darling editor at Universal Press, who says there’s a error on my Web site. Now, riding herd over my Web site isn’t my editor’s job, but he’s a good sport so when he got a call, he called me. On the column page, I’d typed in a wrong URL for the "Dog(s) In Yard" signs I’d written about, and typed "mounting software" instead of "mounting hardware." Rob Loomis, who owns the company — nice guy he is, with a cute dog — called my editor when he noticed it. (It hadn’t gone out that way in the syndicated column. I screwed it up in my 2 a.m. Web posting only.)

Now, it’s fixed. It’s all fixed. And the next time I get the bright idea to add content to the Web site in the middle of the night, I’m going to dope-slap myself back to sleep.

The "Dog(s) in Yard" signs are a great idea. Here’s the real link to them, too. A "Beware of Dog" sign may be an invitation to a lawsuit, suggesting to a sharp-eyed lawyer that you had an aggressive dog (even if you didn’t) and knew about it (even if you didn’t). A "Dog(s) in Yard" sign accomplishes the same goal: Keeping people out of your yard and the gates closed.

The picture is of Rob’s cute dog, name of Jackson.  Bet Jackson has more sense than to post to the Web at 2 a.m.

  1. Well how about these free translations of some signs from Finland:

    * I can run to the gate in two seconds. How about you?

    * Make my day, break-in.

    * If you enter and the owner isn’t home, lie down and hope for the best.

    * Small but feisty

    Luckily Finland isn’t as trigger-happy with lawsuits as the states.
