Hello, Gov. Arnold?

Being the impatient type, I’m having a hard time not hanging up while waiting on hold to tell the governor’s staff that I’d like the governor to sign SB 1578, legislation that bans keeping dogs on chain for life. I think I’m getting close to the 20-minute mark. But then, what’s 20minutes to keep a dog from being in misery for life?

Here’s why you should call the governor if you’re a California resident (916-445-2841) and urge him to sign SB 1578. More information here and here.  Find out why this is as much a public safety issue as it is an animal cruelty issue.  And then call.

The governor’s staff will eventually answer the phone.  (Actually, they didn’t ask if I were a California, so maybe it doesn’t matter — unless they were looking at caller ID.) If you call (please do!) be polite. And while you’re at it, as him to sign AB 450, the bill to help animals during emergencies, which requires that the Office of
Emergency Services approve, adopt, and incorporate the California Animal Response Emergency System program into the standardized emergency management system. Never forget the lessons of Katrina.

Jump to it!

OK, so there’s a horrible transition to … I took a really good picture this weekend. I am not a photographer, by any means, so this makes me happy. I took it at a top dog-agility competition in Sunnyvale, Calif., and the dog is named Jazz. Her owner also has one of my dog McKenzie’s littermates.  I tried to get a picture of Olympic medalist Greg Louganis — he competes in agility with his dogs now — but couldn’t manage it without looking like too much of a dorky fan. He looks so wonderful and healthy, and I’m so happy for him. Still one of the handsomest men ever born.

  3. I saw that shot on your flickr photostream and had to stop for a while. It is great!

And black dogs are photogenic, you just need a bit of luck and lots of light. We have more than enough shots of black blobs or blurs in the frame. That’s one of the reasons why I like our yellow flatcoat so much ;)
