Blue retired
By Gina Spadafori

Kristin Mulhall, a young trainer with a bright future, has given Bluesthestandard a home after his owners were pressured to retire him:
"I watched him go all the way up
and when he started going downhill I felt bad for him," said Mulhall,
23. "He’s won a lot of money for a lot of people, and he deserved
better than running at the bottom level. Steve is a really nice guy and
he cares about this horse."
Blue was scratched from his final race last week:
[Owner Steve] Sobel said [trainer Bob] Hess called him
Thursday morning and said there was "too much heat" from the California
Horse Racing Board and the state veterinarian to run the gelding. Hess
scratched Bluesthestandard, declaring him sick, despite his belief the
horse could have run well.
This million-dollar earner who ended up a cheap claimer is going to spend the rest of his days in comfort. Kristin, if I win the lottery tomorrow, I’m sending the horses I’ll be
buying to you. You’re a realist with heart and class.

I made a donation in Ms. Mulhall’s honor to ReRun, which helps ex-racehorses find a second career, and to the United Pegasus Foundation, which provides retirement homes for others.
