The $50,000 kitten
By Gina Spadafori

I’m sorry, but paying $50K to clone even the most beloved pet is just twisted. Geez, this person could have gotten a lovely kitten or cat from a shelter (or even a reputable breeder, if she wanted a pedigreed), and had something in the neighborhood of $49,950 left to donate to shelters to help other cats.
I love my animals, and I grieve them when they die. But I would not choose to clone them, at any price. A living being is more than his or her DNA: We are the sum of our genetics and our experience. The pup I raised starting when I was 26 would not be the same as the one I raised at 46, even if that second pup were a genetic clone of the first.
Besides, if I cloned a new animal, I would miss the opportunity to meet the next wonderful animal in my life.
