The animals of Kabul
By Gina Spadafori
July 3, 2004
This morning I interviewed Pamela Constable, an experienced foreign correspondent who is currently the Washington Post’s bureau chief in Afghanistan. She’s on vacation right now, home in Arlington, Va., promoting her new book, “Fragments of Grace: My Search for Meaning in the Strife of South Asia.” The book is extraordinary: lucid, lyrically and courageous. I was interviewing her specifically about her love of animals, for a piece that will be in The Bark, along with an excerpt from the book, a little of which concerns her work with animals overseas.
She is working to help start a veterinary clinic in Kabul, the first for non-working animals. The concept of a companion animal is so foreign there, so most of the “pets” belong to, well, foreigners. I was so touched by her compassion for these animals, and her determination to do what she can to help, even if it’s barely scratching the surface of the overwhelming need.
The group trying to start the Afghan clinic is the Mayhew Animal Home, in London. Donations are always welcome. Constable will herself be donating the proceeds from her book to the cause.
